Comment:

31) Dame Fortune 32) My Mind Capsized 33) The STP Song 34) Interlude 2 35) Half a Mind. Ah, the Rounders and their first four albums. I finally got Indian War Whoop (their third album) yesterday, so I put this mix together. The first album is amazingly great, the second is a little weaker but very worthwhile, and The Moray Eels... is worth your time; IWW is a bit much, though. As a result, I've edited all of the "goofy" narrative intros from "Sweet Apple Cider", "Cocaine Blues" and "Sky Divers."

Great! I agree with your comments, too, save for the 3rd album (which I haven't heard). I like this band, though they're best in small doses, I think.

I'm very curious about these guys, I've only heard one or two songs. I always hear them described as "folky" and I'm not a big folk fan. whats your take on the "folkiness"?

Well, the first two albums are definitely folky, but in a very subversive (in its literal sense) way: although they play a lot of traditional songs with guitar, banjo, and fiddle, there's a palpable sense of abandon and "fucking with the formula" (as well as the lyrics) that's pretty comparable to their sibling band, the Fugs (both Weber and Stampfel were on the initial Fugs demos and first album), but with a lot more in the way of musical chops. The third and fourth albums aren't folk albums at all (even though the third album has its share of folk standards)--they're totally unrehearsed, free-form, super-druggy psych.

Great mix! Good Taste is Timeless is worth checking out as well. I agree that IWW is a bit much. The Moray Eels is worthy of time as well. I met Weber and Stampfel a few years back and have maintained contact with them and had subsequent conversations, mostly with Weber do to geographic proximity. He is a "unique" individual. I love the Modals!

...respect this a lot even though my only exposure to The Modals are via Easy Rider Sndtrck. Good job as always.

i always loved what I heard of this troupe. I would kill for a decent compilation, and I think this one hits the spot perfectly. Another one for the pile, please
