lanterna 2004
Comment:
ORIGINAL MIX: 1/30/99: 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY RE-MIX: 1/15/04- 6/05 - Remastered via Roxio Media editorNamed for Henry Frayne's Lanterna--this is one of my favorite all time mixes. Great for driving when you don't want to get too reved up. It made me dig through the collection as Frayne uses a lot of treatments and ambience along with his delayed pedal steel guitar on this record.
I e-mailed him about this work and he answered back his thanks (which I thought was just too cool). Due for an "overhaul": Summer of 2003.
...from start to finish, there is a gradual, almost imperceptible increase in pace...and them BAM...it's over. [See also here]

see, the nutty thing here is that i've met henry - i went to the college he works for. i doubt he remembers it, as we were introduced at a borders at, like, eight pm, but it's sorta nutty that you comment on the first mixtape i upload, and i look at the first one you've uploaded, and yeah. small world.
quite beautiful. love the art, too.
ok. it's time for my second, post-experience review. this tape is truly amazing. i didnt have a chance to give it the full attention it deserved until a 2.5 hour drive ended up taking me 9 hours (due to horrendous directions) i would have been too infuriated to drive, but this tape maintained a tranquility that soothed my rage. honestly. it is definitely a "mood tape" which is good because you know when to listen to it and why you're listening to it. my horizons are definitely broadened. wonderful job, gene!
hello gene,
here i go again. another lanterna.
i'm also touring the west coast in oct/nov.
just thought i'd let you know.

wow...just got the new Lanterna, "Elm Street" delivered today (thanks for the 'heads up', henry)-:::-smooth, articulated & dreamy guitar-scapes that sends you swoozey-woozey on headphones and makes me say "honey, another glass of wine??" mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
g.a.b......@ the labs.......LOVE Lanterna! "Silent Hills" is one of my favorite songs, and that entire cd makes for (imho) a perfect background for reading in the middle of the night---when you find yourself pausing to muse/meditate over a passage just read! I've copied for friends who love it equally.....that's the only one I have though. I'd have to imagine this as being superior stuff!
I STILL be diggin' on this one.
I've always been a huge fan of Lanterna since I discovered them in the radio station rotation bin!! Excellent experimental mix...
Odd isn't it? Nearly a year to the date of my first comment on this mix and I've finally been granted a copy of this. g.a.b. labs is to mixing what Frank Lloyd Wright is to architecture: minimal impact on the exterior landscape but breathtaking on the inside. Here are some of my notes I made while listening to this yesterday: Tr. #1-the tones & repeated motifs at the end reminded me exactly of the first time I attended a Navajo peyote ceremony, and-specifically, the Dawn;Track #5-moody without brodding-hopeful;#6-"downpour intro'", excellent, I don't think anyone else plays like Frayne, he has a patent on that tone and rolling guitarism; #7-reminds me of Marc Antoine, note-perfect;#8-I envision Shiprock, New Mexico; #9-if I didn't know the track title I'd say this gives off the same "mental ambience" as when I've spent a full, fun day in the sunshine.., the feeling, post-shower, when I'm thinking about my first cocktail and settling into watch the sun set....the glow still on me.....;#10- the drums create a great sense of motion, along with Frayne's guitar textures;Side 2: #2- ahh, Fripp's a "gentleman."; #3- cinematic...on to Murmansk!; #4-my absolute favorite, bar none, of Lanterna's tracks...I first heard that cd in Denver at B&N, walked away from it at a listening station to peruse the books; I couldn't stop hearing it in my head-I went back and bought it. Morricone would weep to hear this! the Cinecitta calls...; #s 5 & 6- continues the sweeping cinematic soundscapes-brilliantly thought-out segues; #7-Ohh! Hmm, ok, this is a favorite, too!!! Gorgeous tone, playful and joyful---message imparted:received; #8-Wright, a virtuoso. Love the foreboding tones; #9-driving, full-force Frayne!; #10- bubbly and the juste mot for the ending! Thanks g.a.b. labs!!!
How can I get a copy of this?
Waiting with excited anticipation.

Why ain't you posting 11 mixes a day anymore. Less prolific in your old age?
Well sorta'...when I 1st arrived here (2000), I had been mixing awhile...so I started posting mixes that had been made for 4-5 years already. Now with growing kids (aged 9 & 7) time gets more precious and free time (when mixing would occur) less of an available luxury.
But, as a matter of fact I DO have a new mix ready to post...this evening or tomorrow AM (and I bet you'll know a bunch of the tunes, too!)

Lanterna 04 arrived today .. many thanks Gene
especially looking forward to the Frayne stuff.
Ah, a Gilmore track too .. interesting.
Will get back to you once I've digested it.

2007: Uploading mix to DivShare, Nov 1, '07.
I have made a few CDs in which I tried to (but never could) capture the feeling that Gene has so perfectly put together on Lanterna. What a terrific mind-soothing journey this one is ... I have listened to it the entirety of this rainy and suddenly very cold November day, 07. Truly, I have appreciated the company of Lanterna from start to finish in such a continuum that eventually there is neither beginning nor end. Such is the nature of a completed circle. Wonderful work here. I also mentioned to Gene that the image shown here complements the music "to a T" -- and it does. All the stars for this one! -- Tranzmotion
Damn lovely tracklist, what is the password 4 this mix?
Thanks. The password is '0506'.
