Comment:

80 minutes from another often misunderstood, iconoclastic and influential artist. In this case, however, I've just discovered his work this year, thanks to my friend Rich. This disc is culled from his first three records (1970-1972) and from a 1975 album with Brian Jackson (From South Africa to South Carolina). If anyone has any other suggestions of other albums by him that I need to check out, I'd appreciate it. In the meantime, I think that this mix just about covers everything that I find great about Gil (and eliminates some of his more annoying qualities by presenting the songs--with a few exceptions--without his somewhat brow-beating, overly expository spoken introductions.

Excellent stuff, Rob. I've been a long time admirer of GS-H and seen him live quite a few times...when he showed up (I've even forgiven him his drugs hypocrisy.)I'd be inclined to recommend most of his albums, even though I don't have them all, based purely on the fact that he is always so eloquent and powerful on what I have. It's a shame the Arista's are out-of-print (their 2CD compilation is a great starter, I think Moving Target is still in-print and is worthy). I'd recommend 'Winter in America' (check out the dated but scathingly funny H2O Gate Blues) and his more recent 'Spirits', whilst being a bit sentimental at times and reworking old territory, is well worth the normally discount price it can be obtained for. I also have a live album of his (on vinyl) bought at a gig with the Amnesia Express which shows what an amazing band he had (this would be in the late 80's I guess). It was on an obscure label (not TVT) and I've never seen it on CD.Hope that helps :~)

Great fucking stuff! Gil seems to fall under the radar of most of the "hip" young record buyers that are rediscovering the greats of the sixties and the seventies. I just recently rediscovered his greatness while making an all vinyl disc and ended up listening to the both albums I have in their entirety (a wonderful distraction!!!). The song I used from "From South Africa..." was "South Carolina", which I love (and you skipped). I like every record album by him that I've heard - and he's one of the few artists that don't bother me when they get preachy. My first exposure to him was his 1983/84 anti-Reagan rant "Rerun" which still stands up despite it's "of the moment" production and instrumentation. The man needs a good 3 CD retrospective with full liner notes!
