This mix isn't at all what I initially planned. I started out on Sunday planning on making a mix titled "Continue" for Gillian, but as I was trying to mix it, virtually every song I planned to use got pushed to the wayside. What emerged, almost unconsciously, was an album full of long sad songs about the cold, about sleeping, about dreaming, about finding it hard to try to feel good. And when I was almost done mixing it, I got the news (from an AOTM Feedback, no less) that Elliott Smith, my favorite musician, had killed himself. Just like how every cineaste can name the movie that really got them into movies, I can say that when I started listening to Elliott Smith is when I really started to LOVE music. And... when you have such an emotional rapport with an artist... and then that artist takes his/her life... it's hard to communicate to anyone else exactly why that's so hard to bear. Anyway, I didn't even know what I was making when I started making this mix, but somehow it took shape, and it's exactly what I needed for a time like this. So, this mix is as much for me as it is for Gillian. I hope she doesn't mind.
