Comment:
Fine, there goes whatever indie cred I may have once had. But, hey, everybody has a guilty pleasure or two. And this isn't really all that guilty -- after all, take some pithy lyrics, a catchy hook, then 15 minutes of pointless jamming, and what have you got? "Dark Star"? Or Sonic Youth's "Diamond Sea"? Or, hell, VU's "Sister Ray." Ok, I'm pushing it -- the Dead didn't do much that was groundbreaking, their lyrics were often banal and/or misogynistic, their harmonies made CSN wince. But, hey, I like it. And despite what people say about them being predominantly a band best enjoyed live, I think some of their studio work was downright respectable (or at least enjoyable). First of a 2-volume set, 4 discs in all.
Feedback:
Everybody who has been listening to "Shakedown Street" in private, raise your hand!
It IS a pretty damn embarrassing song -- disc Dead, indeed. But when the mood strikes... and they did nail it live on occasion.
Oops, that should read "Disco Dead."
brilliant. I still like the Dead, Marc, and would steal these from you if I didn't have all of it already. The Eno cds are great, by the way.
I was surprised about the number of people who came out against the Dead in the recent Frankenstein thang. I think it must be more of an American thing born out of over exposure and ranting Deadheads (me and that valis fella had a little discussion about it).I've never been taken by the whole live Dead thing but I have time for the jangly harmonious Workingman's Dead and American Beauty...although, that said, I've not had time for them for a few years, must go and give them a try...
Great mixes. Skipped over France, huh? Not giving Donna her due....
I absolutely love the Dead during this period (and through Mars Hotel) and have no problems admitting it. One of my favorite bands of all-time really, at this point. However, for me they lost it after Mars Hotel (although parts of Terrapin Station and accompanying shows were good) and spawned a horrifying number of shitty jam bands in their wake.
