Comment:

The title may be a little precious, I dunno... many times in my life, people have asked me my favorite writers and I have included guys like Lou Reed and Dylan and Tom Waits. I really don't feel as though that's a precious or glib thing to do. What matters is the quality and clarity and strength of writing, not its style or form. Not to me...

So I wanted to make a tape of subjectively great songwriters. my favorites; guys, and gals, I respect. People who I see as absolute, pure practitioners of their craft.

This volume I wanted a focus on guys who came from Punk, or influenced it, or who were punk without knowing it or having that name. sub themes that jumped out right away: covers and unearthing lost 70s classics. The dylan stuff, most of the Morrison; the Newman and Zevon and Patti Smith. The Bowie. The Lou Reed is right at the cusp of the 80s. Both were unintentional but happened and worked.

Both volumes are great. I really like the idea and execution. It's not precious at all. Some might argue that it's a lot tougher to write a good short story with a melody and a rhyming scheme (and within the confines of a reasonably short song).
