Comment:
This tape *almost* qualifies as the third installment in my songwriters comp series, except I have no third installment planned. Many of the same artists. I get in ruts, what can I tell ya? Theme here is Autumn and music that puts me in a bittersweet, sorta melancholy, Autumnal mood. Autumn's my favorite season, which strikes me odd, since it's essentially the Season of Decay and Rot and Death. Yet it's this beautiful time and the weather is perfect, mostly, especially following the hot and humid summers we get in my part of the country ( an undisclosed location in Southwest Ohio...)Most of these artists influenced me going back to high school, and I probably got hip to many of them during Fall, which always seems the most urgent and crucial time of any school year. Prince and Husker Du, and indeed, any Minneapolis band, always suggest a sort of rust belt, permanent-autumn-afternoon-vibe and I'm not sure why that is, but I suspect it's connected to the videos for " when Doves Cry" and the whole "Purple Rain" movie. I dunno, musc is season-specific, to me. Certain songs I listen to more at certain times of year. I listen to The Pixies more often in the Summer than in the Winter. " Cortez the Killer", Neil Young and classic rock in general figure prominently during my Fall-winter months. don't ask me to explain these things; I just document 'em...
Main last thing I wanna send shout outs to is the Gillian Welch. My Dad lives in Greenville, SC, and last Thanksgiving I spent a lot of time listening to " Hickory Wind" ( which is a Gram Parsons cover for those who don't know) as we drove around town, so not only is the song forever associated with Autumn in my mind; not only is it absolutely gorgeous; but, yes, in South Carolina, there *are* " many a tall pine." For whatever that's worth.
Mr. Cortez, I hope that's enough notes for ya...
Feedback:
"harder now that it's over" is a *really* good fall song. never even thought of that. there's a lot of other good stuff here, too. good job.
I think we have the same CD collection. V. nice mix, and big ups for including rambling commentary/explanation! =) Fall mixes are my fave.
For all my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when Patti Smith does "When Doves Cry".
