In our Deep Cuts, Mom goes eclectic, as we motor up the East Coast from South Carolina to New York; two different states, three different worlds. Perhaps the least overtly Mom-centric track on our list comes from below the Mason-Dixon line, as alt-rocker Iron & Wine slides into the timeworn, heartfelt country tradition of apologizing to Mother for a laundry list of sins in “Upward Over the Mountain.” Up in the 718, it’s not Mama, but [i]Grandma[/i] opening the card from hip-hop collective LL Cool J & Dru Hill in the tough-on-the-outside, gooey-in-the-center affection of “Big Mama (Unconditional Love).” And cabaret hipster Rufus Wainwright’s Beach Boys-influenced, Jon Brion-produced eccentricity in “Beauty Mark” is rendered all the more poignant by the fact that he lost his mother, singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, early in 2010.
