Comment:

Though the Cocteau Twins tend to be one of those love 'em or hate 'em bands, I'm one of the few who take the middle ground; I think they had some great material, they were undeniably groundbreaking, but a little Cocteaus go a looong way. Even so, I had a tough time keeping this on a single disc. I ended up opting to make a four-year cut-off, as their work beginning with 1988's Blue Bell Knoll was quite different, at least sonically, and the brightness and clarity of the latter period contrasts greatly with the creepy murkiness of their early work. I'd like to do a 1988-1998 collection, but I'll need to fill some gaps in my collection (anyone with Heaven Or Las Vegas and any b-sides, I'd love to hook up with you).

Look at those titles! Some journalist once wrote about the Twins, 'Owning all their records would be like owning ten identical wedding dresses: perverse', which I think sums it up. I really like the early stuff and Heaven or Las Vegas (only got a crappy dubbed tape of it, though, so probably not much use to you).

Actually, while I see the point of the journalist's comment, there is actual some variety among the titles -- the first couple are spooky & goth, Treasure is a bit more melodic, Victorialand is mellow and quiet; still, like I said, I rarely listen to an entire album, hence the necessity for this mix.

This looks great , Marc. I'd love a copy. I decided I really liked this band when I saw them on The Old Grey Whistle Test many moons ago. If you're up for another trade anytime, please drop me a line.

Arg, everyone's getting their Cocteau mixes up before me! ;) I agree about splitting it up at Blue Bell Knoll. You'd never be able to cover it all on one CD, anyway. Now, I guess I'd better get working on mine...

Put me in the "love em" category, although I couldn't tell you the last time I listened to one of their CDs. There's no other band that sounds anything like them. I have Heaven or Las Vegas CD, as well as some assorted singles with previously unreleased b-sides. Contact me if you want me to hook ya up.

Scott, I agree -- too much good stuff to fit onto one CD. I was actually considering fleshing out my Cocteaus set, only because I originally did it on a 90-minute tape and had a friend split it onto two CDs. Marc, I have pretty much everything (b-sides, non-album, box set, albums, etc.) if you're interested in a trade. (I am squarely in the "love" category, too.)

I've tried... and tried... and tried... and tried to get into this band, but cannot do so for the life of me.

I went through a big Cocteau Twins phase in the late 80's and burned out on them. I still have them on vinyl, but I just can't listen to an entire record anymore. This mix would be a great way to keep it interesting!
