Comment:
Round two of this Frankenstein thing. You think you know your music collection, then you take one of these challenges. ( Lullaby? *Fuck* me!) Oh yeah, the title is s'posed to a phoneticized take on the opening notes of Edgar Winter's " Frankenstein." 1) Last record bought: These unreleased versions make me pull my remaining hairs out. Who are these nitwits running record labels? 2) Blues: Yeah, there's a parenthetical subtitle to this track, but how much label space did you expect me to take, anyway? 3) Morning motivator: Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend/Altered Beast/100% Fun trifecta is just pop heaven. 4) Romantic song: You're Sara Earle: Steve writes this song for you b/c he can't get it together to get you a present. Do you take it to heart and love him more OR do you say, " You write songs all day long, I want my roses, asshole!" 5) Earliest song: Back to the Beatles-- otherwise it was disco ( I'm a child of the 70s, what can I say?)6) Song from Film: " Memo From Turner" probably best Stones tune not written by Stones. ( Jagger/Cooder.) 7) Favorite band: I had to include a track from " Highway 61" since that 500 Best Albums list is out and I'm sorry but " Sgt. Pepper's" just isn't the best album ever. This is. Or that first Velvet Underground. " Sgt Pepper's isn't even the best Beatles album-- "Revover" is much better! 8) Artist you don't like, song you do: I used to sorta like Gumball, but this was the only track on the major label debut I could stomach. 9) Lullaby: For all the head-scratchers, al I can say is, Jorma Kaukonen composed this in tribute to his son's birth, so... 10) Funny song; This almost made category #8. Still, calling Larry King and making the lyric of the Buzzcocks classic into a question for him is pure genius. This tune cracks me up every time. 11) Good covers: Tape time left gets you three-- Fudge Tunnel, an otherwise forgettable grindcore combo sluges up Cream; Ramones set Dylan to maximum warp; and Gumball execute a fairly pointless version of the Damned, which features J Mascis on the spoken intro. Those are *good* covers, yes? 12) Song reminds you of school: It's 1981 and I'm in 8th grade. I've just recovered from bubblegum and discovered serious rock music. The l;ocal rock outlet has Rust Never Sleeps in heavy rotation and I hear " Powderfinger" and become an instant Neil Young convert. This remains my all-time favorite Neil tune. 13) Guilty pleasure: I'm not exactly ashamed of the Grateful Dead, but I don't talk about them much, b/c people always misunderstand. 14) FUNKY: Funkadelic-- what else can I say? 15) Rainy Day song: It's Tom Waits, contemporary master of the rainy day song and it's from RAIN DOGS... 16) Happy-no-matter-when: Some people knock me as too mellow and down, musically. This ain't. 17) " Look" in the title: Again sacrificing obvious for the sheer relief of finding something. 18) Dead Rockers Society: In my quest not to use something obvious, I found Mr. Zevon and then had to scold myself when I exulted, " Warren Zevon's dead!" 19) Elvis!: Apart from " If I Can Dream" you just can't go wrong with Elvis. 20) Wildcard: abigail_dice sez you can't have too much ryan adams or rhett miler in a mix, so even tho I used this track recently elsewhere, I'm letting abigail take the fall for itr being here. Thanks, abigail. And then I started over, as you can see for yourself...Feedback:
