Comment:
Of Montreal are doubtlessly the most innovative, creative, and prolific of the Elephant 6 indie-pop crowd. They're also, let's be honest, the most cloying and intermittently unlistenable. They meld the lyrical, vocal and instrumental challenges of Neutral Milk Hotel with the whimsical character studies and love songs of Village Green-era Kinks and studio experimentation of Smile-era Beach Boys, whipping out some of the most complex lyrical and compositional works you'll ever hear, only to have it frequently come crashing down with more tempo and time-signature changes and bizarre instrumentation and off-kilter harmonies thrown into each song than most bands put on an entire album. You've gotta admire a band that offers a concept album tracing every event during the rise and fall of a doomed relationship, or issues a collection of early home recordings in which every song title features some sort of nonsense about Dustin Hoffman. I've got their entire catalog, nearly a dozen albums and ep's, each of which I listen to very very rarely -- making for one of my best mixes, as each of those discs has a few tunes that are simply amazing once removed from their typically more annoying contexts.
Feedback:
I pretty much agree with your assessment. They are up and down, but boy when they get up there they can write some damn fine stuff. This looks very cool.
I agree with Adam. Great mix, and top of the pile for me, Marc.
Very cool mix. It's true that they bury some great pop songs between lots of atonal self-indulgent studio meanderings, but I love them anyway. Could ya save me a copy? Let me know what I could offer in return, chief.
Now that I think about out, I guess my comment applies more to Olivia Tremor Control, but I'd still like to get a copy.
It, not out. Man, I suck at writing feedback.
Looks like Ion's been outed. Er, itted. I see what you mean about OTC -- though, at least on their 2 proper albums, they had loads of great songs (certainly better than Of Montreal); but those between-song studio noodlings on the later album were pretty damn annoying.
I agree with you folks about the up-down nature of this band, but Cherry Peel and Coquelicot are two of my favorite records of the past ten years, and Horse & Elephant Eatery and Gay Parade have some amazing tracks, as well. I was planning on doing one of these before I sold half of their albums, but never got around to it. Nice job, although you didn't include my very favorite songs--"Penelope" and "Nikki Lighthouse"--or "Let's Do Everything for the First Time Forever" (another favorite). Huge props for including "I Can't Stop Your Memory", "Neat Little Domestic Life", "Old Familiar Way" and "Don't Ask Me to Explain", though.
Marc, you've done the near impossible with this mix. Actually, I agree with Rob about those two albums - I can listen to them *almost* the whole way through; well, maybe 2/3 of the way. Same for Gay Parade. So many great songs, amidst so much self-indulgent goofin' around.
Ooohh... you're reason for making this comp. is the exact reason I don't own anything by them. I get exhausted trying to get to the brilliant bits. My best friend recently got married and they played a couple songs off Cherry Peel during their reception... There's something so charming about watching grandma bounce along with Of Montreal...
what album is nikki lighthouse on?
