Comment:

I've been wanting to compile Neil's classic era for some time, eagerly waiting for him to remaster his badly-neglected back-catalog or even release the long-promised box set. Finally gave up (though at least he's finally released 4 of the "missing 6" on cd -- alas, still missing the underrated Time Fades Away, so had to settle for a vinyl --> cdr boot). I opted to run the series from the Buffalo Springfield days through his tenure on Reprise (tacking an even 5 years onto his official Decade collection); the last couple efforts may better fit with his more eclectic Geffen era, but this seemed to be a good way to make it an even 4 discs.

This looks great, but I have to be a loser and complain about you ignoring "Journey Thru the Past" and "The Bridge" (two of my five favorite Neil tracks) for inclusion. You can't go wrong with anything in this era, though, as I think Neil from '69 to '80 is pretty much faultless. As you may know, I did a four-disc Neil comp ("Purple words on a gray background"), but started it with his first solo album; to make up for that, I did a single-disc Springfield comp ("Stopping the feeling to wait for the time"), as well.

Both great songs; I ended up unduly lean on the TFA album just because the vinyl source takes it down a notch; plus, while I love "Journey," it's way too similar to "After the Gold Rush."

I'd been thinking of compiling something similar, needn't bother now cos I couldn't improve on this. Long live Shakey - the miserable sod!
