Comment:
I love Buddy Holly - I really do. I daresay that pop music and rock and roll would not be the same without him. He certainly inspired a lot of people (including, sadly, Joe Meek) I've gathered some of my favorite performances by him solo and with the Crickets, some covers by people who really "get him" (and who might not have much of a career without his influence), and a couple of totally maudlin tributes that I love. A couple of notable absences: Tommy Roe's "Sheila", a knock-off of Peggy Sue if there ever was one - still, I like it but couldn't find my copy. Also missing is that goddamned "American Pie" song, because no one ever needs to hear that again - not even the Weird Al version. Anywho, this is for Buddy. [Minor correction - Track 26 is Bobby Fuller Four, "Love's made a fool of you". Sorry - update feature isn't letting me add tracks.]Feedback:
The Buddy stuff is obviously great, but the choice of covers here is absolutely inspired. Great, great work.
Superb...Beautifully done...And, as always, terrific liner notes...
Fantastic Sean.
yep
superb stuff, Sean. Buddy has always been a real favourite of mine. I have the Tommy Roe track if it's not too late for you!
Beautiful tribute. Buddy was the bomb.
Great tribute to a great musician. Quite an unusual guy as well. I'd love to hear a tribute album to him similiar to the "I Sure Miss Gene " album. I've always wanted to visit the statue of him...in ...Lubbock , right?
I have a couple of tribute albums to him, but honestly, they're pretty lame - for a guy who wrote "simple" songs, few people really got it right. I like the Knack's version of Heartbeat, but it didn't quite fit the mood of this. Same with the Mavericks' take on True Love Ways. Not bad, but wimpy.
Wonderful!! I've wanted to do something like this, but you've done it so much better. As Adam said, great pix on the covers. Truly an inspired tribute. RIP Buddy.
Great concept and collection.
Looks nice. Much more of a "tribute" CD than my Buddy comp ("Going faster than a rollercoaster") and probably the better mix for it.
This looks great!
Very cool. I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan myself. I'm especially glad you included the Marshall Crenshaw track. It's one of my favorite Buddy Holly songs not by Buddy Holly.
cool...i just saw "la bamba" on bravo last week - had marshall crenshaw playing buddy. i would've added that song (cryin, waitin, hopin) to this. i'm totally enjoying the mixes you sent, by the way
Sean...Track down Skeeter Davis's version of "Well...All Right", which is on a late 60s album called (what else?) "Skeeter Davis Sings Buddy Holly"...IMHO, the album is mostly mediocre, but her version of the aforementioned track is beyond haunting...Just trying to help...
a great tribute
This is, of course, excellent. Donna and I danced to "True Love Ways" at our wedding.
(By the way, I don't necessarily disagree with your assessment of the Olivia Newton-John song, "Magic," but I still kinda like it.)

Fantastic tribute, Sean! Count me in as one of the Buddy Holly faithful!
