Comment:

With one foot planted firmly in British art-rock and the other in full-throttle American metal, the Cult helped fuse the worlds of post-punk and hard rock just as they were crossing over to a U.S. audience. Singer Ian Astbury eventually found a home for his utopian vision of excess and mystical imagery in the reconstituted Doors, filling Jim Morrison's shoes better than anyone expected. But with Billy Duffy and Matt Sorum, the Cult proved far more than just a back-up band for Astbury's frontman ambitions, with "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Love Removal Machine" setting the template for the neo-metal that would eventually mutate from Hollywood to the Pacific Northwest, making them not merely an important midwife for rock's continued evolution, but also one of the most influential bands of their era.
