Comment:

In conversation with my mates, I often find myself talking about great gigs I've attended. This therefore is the inspiration for this mix. It quickly became apparent that I would need to make this a 2 volume mix otherwise I would have had a hell of a time condensing it into just the 1. I've tried to make the mix chronological but Christ my memory isn't what it was. The track listings themselves therefore may not have been played at the gigs I was at, though most of them were I think? The main concept perhaps unorthodoxically isn't the tracks it's the bands that count on this mix. For those of you interested the choices were made as follows:
1. Wish Bone Ash - were the first band I ever saw live.
2.The Clash - I embraced punk to the max, this band still to this day are 1 of my all time favs.
3. The Stranglers - Probably seen this band more than any other, don't know why, just happened that way.
4.The Climax Blues Band - My first back stage party so I had to include these guys. This song is also the theme tune for Glastonbury 1974 (not that I was there I was only 11 at the time)
5.1979 and a 16 year old dream come true at Knebworth.(By now I'd became thoroughly disillusioned by punk)
6.& 7. The following years Knebworth. Great memories of having to discharge myself from casualty to get to the gig on time but we won't go into that story.
8.Van the Man - On a separate occasion, he also rates on my list of worst gigs ever attended. Newcastle circa '83 this was ace.
9.The Rolling Stones - First time you see em is probably always the best, this was Roundhays Park Leeds '82, I think.
10.U2 - Gateshead '81 (I think) supporting The Police. Including stage scaffolding climbing antics from Bono.
11. Ray Stubbs Rhythm & Blues AllStars - 20 years ago these guys were one of the best pub bands in the North East of England.
12. Steel Pulse - First Reggae band I ever saw, still one of my favs.
13. The Pogues - The crowds enthusiasm scared the shit out of me, guys were leaping off the balconies on to the floor below, great stuff; and Shane finished the set singing lying castrate on the stage.
14. The Waterboys - Mike Scott is one of my song writing heroes, I've seen them several times but this particular gig in a giant marquee in London (Christ knows where exactly) ranks amongst my fav. of all time.
15. Del Amitri - Didn't even want to go to this gig at Oxford Apollo circa '91 but my then girlfriend was a huge fan, have to say I was pretty impressed with them.
16. Sting - As above didn't want to go to the gig but got dragged along. Have to say the Brazilian guy playing lead guitar (don't know his name but he's still with Mr.Sting) was awesome!
17. Neil Young - After some 15 years my dream comes true and I get to see Shakey for the first time at Finsbury Park. He could have been shit (not that he was) and I'd have gone to the great gig in the sky, happy that I'd finally got to see my fav.artist.
18. Pink Floyd - Earls Court '94.Slightly overdid the pre-gig preparations and missed the opening number but this was definately one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
Sorry if I got a little over zealous with the explanations but I hope you can forgive me. Vol 2. follows soon.

I've never heard Wishbone Ash! Much of this I do like especially The Waterboys...
