10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant
Comment:
Folk-rock made for a major ingredient of 10,000 Maniacs early musical recipe, and on her own, Natalie Merchant followed her muse down some folkie footpaths too. Her album The House Carpenter’s Daughter was full of re-arranged folk songs, like the banjo-flecked traditional tune “Owensboro.” She teamed up with veteran U.K. folk-punk Billy Bragg a number of times — together they penned the smoldering song of faith and hypocrisy “Bread and Circuses,” and Merchant joined in when Bragg and Wilco took a stroll down Mermaid Avenue, putting music to unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics like “Birds and Ships.” Of course, all this earthbound activity didn’t stop Merchant from blasting off into outer space with an update of David Bowie’s interstellar journey “Space Oddity.”
