Comment:

When they started out in the early ’80s, 10,000 Maniacs — named in homage to a cult horror flick — were a bunch of eccentric, arty kids from a tiny town in upstate New York. By the end of the decade, they were worldbeating alternative rock stars whose mugs and music were all over MTV and radio. Natalie Merchant led them there, staying the course for a dozen years before finally answering the call of a multi-platinum solo career. It’s a long way from the arch, new-wave-flavored “Planned Obsolescence,” off the Maniacs’ very first EP, to the sleek, soul-soaked grooves of the hit-bound “Candy Everybody Wants” a decade later. Add the adventurous outings Merchant made on her own and you’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Fortunately, you’ve got us to do the legwork, and we’ve culled the crucial cuts from the Maniacs and Merchant right here — all you have to do is click.
