Updated 1/10/04 to include the suggestions that I could get my hands on! Thanks guys- any other suggestions are eagerly sought- wuNo transitions yet and not quite right. trying to capture the true american way of consumerism/materialism.
Suggestions for tracks?
Pleasant Valley Sunday- underneath the all-American suburban dream lies the soul numbing mundanity of maintaining status.
Mercedes Benz- Not only do we want it but we think we deserve it and waste prayers on the quest for material goods.
Step Right up
Lost in the Supermarket: "buying in" to "buying in"- we are guaranteed even a personality if we buy the right stuff and we feel a little good doing it.
Valley of Malls: Always makes me think of long stretches of desert highway along which Mall of America and its clones are the only scenery. Think Egypt, Pyramids, Valley of Kings.
Down in the Mall: WE'll go shopping baby, cause its what we can stand.
Merchandise: Merchandise keeps us in line (but in america most of us ARE what we own-- like it or not, wrong as it may be)
Mountains o' Things:. . . make the world all good and good people are just stepping stones.
Sewing up Crap: About those people we exploit to get the stuff that tracy sang about.
Capitalism Stole. . . : 'nough said
Money: 'nough said
The Last Mall: Even in "the end" we still shop
Feedback:
"Money" by the Beatles and others. "Living in the Mterial World" George Harrison. The Monkees song is perfect
Pleasant Valley Sunday is actually about a county in NJ, a road runs through it named Pleasant Valley Way, and it's always been a suburban dreamland/nightmare. Perfect choice. :) The Zevon choice is excellent. "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel; "Valley of Malls" by Fountains of Wayne; "Step Right Up" by Tom Waits, these also fit.
Thanks to both stripey357 and hemizen for great suggestions!
