Comment:

This is a career spanning Metallica comp I made up this afternoon. It's intended as a gift for my 15 year old cousin who is unfamiliar with the band. I think it approaches definitive. It's the best mix I could fit on two 80 minute discs.

What do you think?

well, this is just my opinion, but here goes.

i would ditch the S&M version of Nothing Else Matters and go for the album cut instead. there needs to be another song off of Load, possibly Outlaw Torn - to include some more of the 'left field' material the band has done.

there definately needs to be another song off of Justice, possibly the title track itself. and another off of St. Anger, the most underrated album of this year.

although the cover songs are a part of the live show, you could probably omit one of them here. or possibly omit one of the Ride The Lightning tracks in favor of Call Of Ktulu, since the instrumentals are sublime and were a big part of early Metallica.

boy, it seems like i just shot down your entire mix. hopefully you don't take it that way. that's the great thing about Metallica, they have so much good material that fans can bicker over what the best songs are.

My original mix included Kthulu but it's 8 minutes were taking up too much space.

I think the final answer is that it's impossible to sum up Metallica fully in 160 minutes.

I really should have included an instrumental tho. Fudge.

I like the S+M version of "Nothing Else Matters," so kudos for including it. 4 tracks off 'Ride the Lightning' + only 1 off 'Load?' I'm 1 of those guys that got into Metallica only in the late 80s. Hence, their later stuff is what caught + held my interest. I've never thought to make a Metallica mix, but I just might have to try. Hmmm... Anyways, you're right: it's probably impossible to get it right, though that kinda means it's impossible to get it WRONG. Hmmm... Out.
