Comment:

A time for bad hair, baggy shirts, and drug abuse, the Romantic period (1820-1910) saw composition become increasingly introspective and self-indulgent. Berlioz kicked off with a prodigious opium habit, and Wagner soon followed with scandalous adultery and some very long operas. Verdi grew a very impressive moustache and put the "Grand" in "Grand Opera" with the help of a small herd of elephants.
