Comment:

Now that its final note has been written, we can look back at the 20th century and try to make sense of what often seemed chaotic or strange . . . but always promising, and relentlessly new. Just as the visual arts struggled with the concept of what painting was, or what the function of architecture should be, so to did the musical world, breaking apart traditional melodic and harmonic structures, and reassembling them in surprising new ways. Sure, there were traditionalists; Holst grew out of soil enriched by Grieg and Wagner, and Samuel Barber venerated Brahms. But the century also unleashed the likes of Gershwin and Weill, breaking open the symphony hall doors to let in the sounds of the street — or, in Weill’s case, der strasse. No matter what your tastes, sensibilities, preferences, or inclinations, we guarantee that our Essentials playlist will both enrich and challenge you.
