Comment:

My homage to one of the greatest music critics ever. The mix was inspired by the biography "Let It Blurt."
1) Psychotic Reaction - A fav. song of Lester's, it inspired his famous essay "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung.
2) MC5 - Lester orinally hated MC5 But was bold enough to admit he'd got it wrong.
3) Real Cool Time - Lester wrote an epic manifesto on The Stooges called "Of Pop & Pies & Fun. I personally love this Stooges track.
4) The Velvet Underground - Lester considered the Velvets "Rock 'n' Roll's Ultimate Expression Of Nihilism & Destruction."
5)Five To One - Lester's band - The Lester Bangs Conspiracy covered this song on live performances.
6)Lester wrote a now legendary posthumous interview with Jimi Hendrix. Wild Thing just sortof fits the mix.
7)Brown Shoes Don't Make It - In October '69 Lester turned up to a first meeting with representatives from 'Rolling Stone' they couln't believe that the guy who submitted radical reviews to the mag was wearing, short hair, a suit and tie together with brown shoes. So naturally the Frank Zappa track gets included on the mix.
8)Lester wrote of Beefheart, "The Only True Dadaist In Rock."
9)Lester raved about Roxy Music - this is one of my fav. songs.
10 - 13- The CBGB's era - Need I say more.
14)Lester considered "Anarchy In The UK" to be one of the greatest singles ever made. Hard to disagree really!
15) Initially slow to catch on, Lester later described The Clash as "The Missing Link Between Black Music & White Noise."
16)I was surprised to learn that Lester was into ZZ Top (though initially he wasn't) This song seems to sum Lester up perfectly.
17)Lester had a love/hate relationship with Reed though ultimately he idolised Reed. It would have been more appropriate to choose a track from Metal Machine Music but I couldn's spare 16 mins. for a track!
18)Lester gets a name drop in this song.
Almost half the mix is live though it wasn't originally intended, the live trax suit the mix fine. I would have loved to have included, The Lester Bangs Conspiracy track 'Let It Blurt.' but couldn't get my hands on a copy, too bad! Finally big thanx to Gobi for all your help on this one. Cheers mate!

Great to see this today, having just started reading the latest Lester collection. Check out my own proposed soundtrack to a possible biopic.

Great mix and great tribute. I loved reading Lester Bang's reviews in Creem back in the day and his "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung" book is required reading for anyone interested in rock 'n roll. I haven't read "Let It Blurt" but you mix has inspired me to run out and get it.

Good work French Connection! I loved that book..., and laughed quite a bit at his thoughts, especially the "valuation of records in Record Stores" where he gets the clerk to shift an LP into the bargain bin...

I am gobsmacked. You told me about this idea and I was really excited. I had no idea that you would do it so well, however! (and I know that sounds sarcastic and patronising, but it isn't meant to be). Your liner notes are also amazing. I'm really looking forward to trade for this please. Speak very soon! G. xx

Great mix. Can I get a copy? I was hoping to see a Peter Laughner song, but where it'd fit, I don't know.

Lovely mix. You should still put something from MMM though. Just fade in about a minute of that shit and then fade out...that's all you need for MMM. I love Metal Machine Music if for no other reason than it gave Lester a hell of a jolt; he wrote about and referenced MMM in so much of his work and it was always great to read Lester ranting about Lou Reed.

Awesome. I'll have to read that biography...all I really know about him is the little bit I've read and how they portrayed him in "Almost Famous"...and I don't know if that was even accurate. Congrats!

This looks really great and...as Rob said, a well-deserved MOTW. I've been plowing through Mainlines, Blood Feasts and Bad Taste whenever I get a chance these days and I really enjoy it. (not as much as Psychotic Reactions and Carbuerator Dung, but still grebt stuff.)
