Comment:
I owe four people mixes. All of them are CDs except for one tape; all of them are freestyle except for one "bizarre-sad" theme. (i.e. Xiu Xiu.) I am afraid. I am especially afraid that the three non-themed mixes will probably wind up being essentially the same thing (I can already predict some common threads, such as Roxy Music's "Do the Strand). And of course there's Bizarre-Sad, and I have absolutely no clue.I made this tape as a way to tell myself, "You can do this." I made it the same way as i made my previous tape for Matt, "Does This Mix Have a Point?" i.e. no thought beforehand. The working title was "Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice, Vol. 7," which I made up during a screenwriting class. The final title comes from the Mercury Rev song on the tape. (That's the one that goes "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.")I thought the end was rather empty, so I added two lines from the post-"Spread" interlude on the OutKast CD:Andre: "What a hell of a way to goddamn wake up."Some background guy: "ICE COLD!"I was wondering if I would ruin my "cred" by starting side two with Rush. Then I realized I had no "cred" to begin with, and besides, "cred" does not buy lunch. So fuck "cred." My fourteen-year-old brother (fifteen this February!) has taught me to love Rush, and I am all the better for it. Even though I don't really want to buy anything besides the best-of cd.And of course there's the Darkness, which at this point seems rather obligatory, as if everyone's using it on their mixes. But of course there's a reason for that, and it's not that hard to figure out.Overall, I am incredibly pleased with this tape. Of course, there's the question of whether I should give this to anyone, but I'll probably hang on to it. I don't have any real example of a mix I made in tape form. Everyone else has those. Now, onto those other four mixes...Feedback:
fantastic.
Curtis Mayfield is always cool, as are the Lips.
