Comment:

This is a personal collection of my favorite GBV tunes. I know I know, for those in the know you might say 'well a best of GBV CD has just been released'. I felt several b-side cuts were omitted and there is no way in hell you can squash all of GBV's greatest tunes on one CD. I had a hard time fitting them on 2 CD's. Some might also ask why I did not include any of the band members solo/side projects etc. Well, I intend to make a separate mix of greatest tunes from all the Fading Captain releases, Tobin Sprout solo material and various other side-projects/collaborations dealing with any of the old or new GBV cast members. I will post it on AOTM as soon as I finish up. It's quite a tedious task as there's so many albums to go over and re-evaluate when undertaking such a massive task. For those not familiar/slightly familiar with GBV I'd like to think this 2CD set would make for a great introduction into the band and their 'legacy'. Unfortunately I haven't picked out any artwork for this yet. Enjoy!

Ask a hundred GBV fans to rattle of their own personal best of and of course you're going to get a hundred different tracklists, so debating your (or anyone's) omissions or questionable inclusions is always a waste of time. And of course, you have to admire anyone who systematically tries to corral Pollard's output - it's a daunting and thankless task - so props for that. I tried and mostly failed years ago to compile anintrodcutory style mix, and that was before the FCS kicked into high gear. Now I just don't have the patience, money or time anymore, so I'm actually looking forward to your strictly FCS mixes, since I only tend to buy "official" GBV product these days. Just please! - no Nate Farley solo stuff (ugh!). Cheers.

Oh, and I actually thing the Best Of disc (the stand alone, not the one in the box set) is about as solid as GBV mix as you are bound to find (well, it sort of has to be since it's straight from the horse's mouth). I mean, it's kind of obvious, kicking off with A Salty Salute and ending with Scientist - it's almost like a meta-GBV album in a way. But if I had to indoctrinate a complete novice, it would be hard to go wrong with pointing him/her to it first, since it cuts the widest swath across the entirety of GBV's career. Anway, I could prattle on all day. Cheers, again.

I echo the sentiments of J.M. below. This looks great, pretty similar to my own of a couple years back (albeit made before the last couple albums). Yes, the recent greatest hits sampler (which I got as part of the lastest box set) does a surprisingly deft job of selecting the band's highlights. I look forward to the side-project mix, and would love to trade, as I just don't have the patience to sift through my own collection to make one; I find most of the side projects to be even more hit-and-miss than GbV (though Speak Kindly... has some fantastic tunes, most notably "Pop Zeus," perhaps one of the 5 best songs in the GbV canon).

Ashamed to admit I was one such novice as mentioned by J.M. Don't know how GBV could have escaped the collective knowledge of me and my mates in England but that's how it goes sometimes. Anyway I'm now well and truly indocrinated.
