Talk about literally going the distance. Once wrongly written off as a one-hit wonder, Cake have weathered countless trends and the rise and fall of alt-rock’s Top 40 tenure to become a rare example of stability in an increasingly shaky music industry. Really now, who else but Cake could pull off covering Barry White one second (the endearingly sloppy blue-eyed soul of “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up”) and Buck Owens (the honky tonk-hopping Americana of “Excuse Me, I Think I’ve Got a Heartache”) the next? No one, and if you don’t believe us, a quick spin through such twisted pop tracks as “Sheep Go to Heaven,” “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” and “Let Me Go” will change your mind within minutes.
