Comment:

The weekend was lost, but not before John & Paul, after a night of boozing and carousing w/Nilsson & Wainwright & Voormann, stumbled into the studio & threw together this set of songs. This album, released in 1976 was not a proper Beatles album (no George or Ringo), but was creditted as such anyway. John & Pauly banged out some of the songs they loved best & came up w/what some called a classic. No official break-up was announced, but the boys were wiped out from the Lost Weekend sessions & the atmosphere that surrounded them. George retreated to Hawaii, Paul to his farm in Wales, John back to NYC & Ringo stayed in LA. This was the last Beatles album until 1980, when John came out of his self-imposed exile w/new girlfriend Marianne Faithful.
I cheated a bit here - Lennon's material is from 1975's Rock & Roll, made in part to satisfy a settlement w/Chuck Berry as to the rights to Come Together (Berry claimed Lennon lifted it from You Can't Catch Me). Paul didn't do this kind of cover album (in the real world) until 1999's Run Devil Run. Still, a little leeway should be granted - if Paul had joined in on the Lost Weekend & there had been a lost covers album produced, Run Devil Run suggested that he likely would have picked at least some of these songs.
