Comment:

1980 - it was a good year, it was a tragically bad year. John was still in exile. He had broken up w/Marianne Faithful, and it wasn't pretty. He had been reported seeing Chrissie Hynde & Yoko brought suit against him for rights to Happiness is a Warm Gun, The Ballad of John & Yoko & Bungalo Bill - she claimed he stole the songs from her. Paul was in NYC, on tour supporting his latest solo effort with his new band The Big Mac Attack. George was slated to appear on Saturday Night Live & Ringo was bumming around the Plaza Hotel. Inspired by the Blues Brothers movie, John called Paul and proposed "putting the band back together." Paul agreed, as there was tension already in the Mac Attack between Paul and lead guitarist Peter Frampton. He rang up George & Ringo, and they met on a summer's day at the Power Station recording studio to make what was to be the final Beatles album.
Watching the Wheels was released late in 1980, right before Lennon was shot down in front of his apartment building in NYC. That was the tragically bad part.
In the real world, Lennon released Double Fantasy. The only problem I have w/the album is that Yoko is on half of it. That wouldn't be so bad if her songs were all on one side of the LP, but they aren't; they interrupt any sense of flow Lennon's songs might have had. Anyway, Woman, Dear Yoko & Beautiful Boy cannot show up here, b/c there was no more Yoko & no Sean. Bummer. I really like Beautiful Boy. I also like I'm Stepping Out from Milk & Honey, so I've included that as well (hey, it was in the can before John was killed). Little sidenote - I've combined John's tracks from Double Fantasy, Milk & Honey and the track Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him onto a CD entitled Double Milk & Honey Fantasy. It works really nicely.
Paul put out McCartney II in May and had a few strong tracks, which I've made his contributions to Watching the Wheels. I've used George's late '79 self-titled album for his material. Ringo was harder - Stop & Smell the roses came out in '81 - too late; Bad Boy came out in '78 - too early (& too stinky). So for Ringo, I used the Lennon-penned Goodnight Vienna (remember, that album didn't come out b/c the Beatles were busy working on their double-disc "This is not an apple..."
Singles: 1. Watching the Wheels b/w Temporary Secretary; 2. (Just Like) Starting Over b/w Goodnight Vienna; 3. Blow Away b/w Cleanup Time; Coming Up b/w Goodnight Tonight.

Thanks, Ian - I've been kicking this idea around for awhile & finally got down to doing it. This thing might be worth fleshing out - could be an interesting story...

Ha! Really nice & amusing set. Lot's of thought gone into this & I love the comments for each period (one thing though, in part 3, ain't that a Rene Magritte homage rather than Marcel Duchamp?).Great work!

Great execution, great musings on the "What if" of it all....and that would be Magritte, v3.....'tis all in the eye of the beholder...
