Comment:
I'm a classical musician, so I always like to hear orchestral instruments mixed with rock. I don't listen to classical music as much as I do rock because I'd rather be playing it. But hearing these instruments makes songs sound very interesting because the instruments are heard in an unconventional setting. Yah, the saxophone isn't a"conventional" orchestra member, but it sounds very cool in symphonic pieces like Ravel/Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition & Gershwin - Porgy & Bess, for example. And now some personal notes: Songs with strings in them I knew off the top of my head. The woodwinds were very tricky...I had to think harder about those. I played oboe in high school also (& still do occassionally), & would play along to that oboe part in the REM song :-) Then later my brother asked me to play the oboe part to the Seal song. It was pretty easy to think of songs with brass in them, I just went back to the ska invasion of '97. I'd still love to hear some others...new
& old, so gimme more suggestions! Esp. ones with flute... which is what I play :-)
Feedback:
Check out Cursive. The band is "emo" rock, I guess, and the only female member plays the cello. It's really unexpected but sounds beautiful. Also, Bright Eyes' last album "Lifted" has a full orchestra on alot of the songs, including the flute! ;)
I like this!
Check out some of the old Jethro Tull songs - Ian Anderson plays flute on quite a few of them.
I highly recommend the String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay. Their cut of "Clocks" is amazing. The Violin does the spiralling riff, the Cello supplies the bass & percussion. Hypnotic.
This was a great idea for a mix...

nice idea! i've been toying with making one myself but i realised i didn't have enough songs to warrant a mix. as for suggestions, what about 'a design for life' by the manic street preachers (strings)?
And don't forget John Cale on viola in the Velvet Underground "Venus in Furs."
