Comment:

Although these folks aren't a big favorite of mine, some of their songs are absolutely spectacular and the Surrealistic Pillow album is great from start to finish. This is my favorite 80 minutes, as I managed to stretch my disc a bit to revise this on 3/12/04.

What ex-spec says, though I've heard White Rabbit perhaps one time to many and therefore don't lament its omission.

Great band, great songs... though I'd have put at least one song from Blows Against the Empire (that album is a guilty pleasure of mine).

"White Rabbit" is a fine tune, but just like French Connection says, I've heard it entirely too many times. Plus, its flaws--the drug/Lewis Carroll thing is a little heavy-handed, the approach is somewhat dated, and it has featured in one too many "those crazy 60s" documentaries and "as-seen-on-TV" collections to warrant inclusion at the expense of other songs--kept it off of this collection. Although you can argue that "Somebody to Love" is overplayed, as well, I think it's a far superior song/performance.

A great collection of a great band. Can't argue with anything here. Saw them in concert several times during their peak and got to say they could be pretty boring with their long jams. But when they were on they were awesome.

A Good collection, Rob. I really think "Crown Of Creation" is their finest album.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. And thank you, Geoff, for that link--I'm going to try that today.

Missed this one. I share your views on the band -- not an essential act, but a pretty good hour or so of music. I had Volunteers on this weekend while I was outside doing some painting in the sunshine (80 degrees in March in San Francisco, gotta love it), and it just sounded so damn good.

I'd say that the Worst Of is absolutely fantastic, and is essential if folks don't have the other real albums, or your mixes.
