Comment:

It has been just over a week since Clear Channel pulled Howard Stern from my city. During that time, I've been listening to Howard's CD from the 80's, "Crucified by the FCC." It's full of stuff that they couldn't play on the air and classic bits. It is funny (not funny ha ha either) how the cycle is repeating itself, though the tone is markedly darker this turn around. I've built this mix around that two disc set.
Whether you love or hate Stern is really of no consequence because something very sinister and evil is going on right now in the United States. Clear Channel claims that they took Howard off the air because he violated some new conduct code that they set in place two days before the "suspension." As John Kerry said, an employer has every right in the world to fire an employee for whatever reason; there's no free speech protection in the private sector, we are only guaranteed freedom from government-imposed censorship. He's absolutely correct, but here's the thing: never mind that the supposed incident for which Howard's show was pulled really had nothing to do with his actions (a caller used the N-word and Howard cut him off - sounds like responsible broadcasting to me, especially since with a flip of the dial you can hear that word repeated ad infinitim on any number of music stations); reports have begun circulating about the Bush Regime's involvement in this whole thing. And why the Bush Regime is involved while in something like this while US citizens are dying every day in Iraq is beyond me. A few days before the pulling of the show, Howard reversed his long-held opinion that Bush is doing a good job because of his ridiculous kowtowing to the religious fanatics on stem cell research and gay marriage. Howard said, "It's time for Bush to go." Howard also called a Senator (I think) out in New Mexico (or somewhere) for her involvement with the Enron scandal and her hypocrisy since then. The word is that, because of these slurs against the Bush-inflicted status quo, the Bush regime, with strong ties to Clear Channel, demanded the kibosh on the Howard Stern Show.
I'm not one for these grand conspiracy theories, but the Bush Regime has a track record here I think. Lying about weapons in Iraq so that Halibron can make a few more billion. Using the most horrific tragedy of our lifetimes to whip up a war for the sole purpose of ensuring big oil's control over a foreign country. Oh yeah, and there was that little thing about the hanging chits in Florida and the appointment of Herr Bush as well. Even Richard Nixon would blush at the way that this regime is abusing and degrading the office of the president to its own ends. Does it take much of a stretch of imagination that the Regime put out a hit on an influential broadcaster (with a big mouth) who didn't exactly see eye to eye with their fanatic fundamentalist zealot agenda? Not in the mind of this little black duck.

"I'm Afraid of Americans" was chosen because this whole McCarthyesque censorship witch hunt scares the crap out of me, but also because Howard has mentioned it in the past as one of his favorite Bowie songs (Bowie performed it live at one of Howard's on-air birthday parties).

"Gimme Some Truth" by John Lennon was chosen because it fits the atmosphere of these times just as well as it did during the Nixon years; also, because Howard has stated his love for Lennon's music many times over the years.

And "Freedom of Choice" by Devo is one of my favorite songs ever. Freedom of choice is what we've got (or at least had), but freedom FROM choice is what we want because we are turning into a lazy, give-it-to-me-now-regardless-of-the-consequences society. We are the Roman Empire in decline.

The title is taken from Howard's father, Ben Stern. I still crack up every time I hear him screaming those words. Also, this is really a double CD mix, not a cassette.

And for those of you missing Howard, check out this fine update page. This dude gives a run-down of the show every day - www.marksfriggin.com. Also, props to www.koam.org for Stern Show updates.

In the midst of all the scariness - some good tunes and some funny, funny bits from Howard and the Gang. Fuck the FCC.

And now, the Regime is using 9-11 as background for their re-appointment campaign. Disgusting. Howard's right - Bush has to go right now. The sooner the better. He and his cronies are too dangerous to the people of the United States. Yeah, in the wake of 9-11, we're all a little nervous, even three years later - but we need more protection from the White House than we do from any terrorist faction. And that is one fucking scary thought.

Just a quick word about the tunes: Many were picked because of their "radio" subject matter, but I didn't just pick out "radio" songs at random. Though not directly one point, the "radio" songs have something to say about shoving shit down listeners' throats.

"Miss America" by David Byrne was chosen not only because it shares a title with Howard's second book, but also for the line, "I miss America" - the ideal America, home of guaranteed, protected freedoms is disappearing little by little every day - you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Thanks for the assist, valis! I was going to include some better artwork, too, but just got too frustrated with the whole thing. I'm proud of this mix and hope that the whole thing isn't just dismissed by people because of the multiple incomplete postings. I'll delete them as soon as I'm able. Thanks again for ALL the help.

I salute you. This is the same day I've learned Blair ordered a Downing St scientist not to report his opinion that climate change, not terrorism, represents the biggest threat to our world.

I'm not that familiar with Howard Stern...except maybe that movie which he played himself (God, I hope I've got the right guy) and if memory serves me I enjoyed it...anyway, the mix itself looks great. Good Job!

Yep, Dom - you've got the right guy. Much of this mix was taken from the movie soundtrack.
