Comment:
Just under 80 minutes from my favorite solo VU alumni, stopping just short of the 80's, chronologically. If it means anything, I do like Sabotage, Helen of Troy and Slow Dazzle more than I would seem to based upon their limited showing here. Last tracks cut: "Please", "Hedda Gabler", "Chickenshit", "My Maria", "Graham Greene", "Mr. Wilson" and "Engine." Thanks to lo-fi for all of the out-of-print material.Feedback:
My fave VU solo stuff is also John Cale. I had this false impression that he would be a snooty asshole (I have no reason why I though that) but when I met him (three days after 9/11) at this art exhibit opening at the Institute Of Contemporary Art here in Philadelphia, he was quiet, shy but very engaging. The small intimate performance that followed with him solo is one of my top live music happenings I have had the pleasure to take in. Great mix!
Outstanding mix, great choices here as well!
Fantastic!
some VU for you? Nice gift here Robby...again, sorry about this past weekend...flu getting me down...still want to make the connect w/ VU!
Curiously, is the "favorite solo VU alumni" bit a comment on how much you love John, or how little you care for Lou? Jes' wondering. Either way, this is quite cool.
diggin' , great mix esp love that 18
super stuff, once again Rob.
Certainly the most fascinating and rewarding of the VU'ers for me. And I'm always slightly amused that he still has such a strong Welsh accent. Nice one, Rob.
Thanks, all. Adam: It's more a reflection of how little I really care for Lou's solo career (there are a few albums that are pretty decent, but I don't think a single one is great), although I think Mr. Cale is quite fine, great at times.
Great mix.
great. i prefer cale over reed too. might do this myself at some point.
Looks great as always Rob. My two favorite John Cale albums are Paris 1919 & the WONDERFUL Vinage violence......the only tune i miss are Church of anthrax:) You're absolutely right about Lou's solo albums.
i'd a kept chickenshit on there, but hell, these are all fantastic picks... cale's my fave vu'er too, absolutely (sp. "vintage violence" and "sabotage"), but i'd say lou's "transformer" and "street hassle" records are great too.
I love Mr Cale, too but I'm also standing up for Mr Reed who may at times make uneven albums has nevertheless written some of the finest R'N'Roll Songs in and out of The VU...Berlin, for me, is an absolute classic! Good Job Rob!
Superb stuff from THE boyo.
Was there ever a question over the best line for a title? Untouchable selections here Rob & you're welcome for the rarities. Sabotage is highly underrated I'd say.
Wow - you're missing a bunch of my faves and this is STILL an amazing comp. Looking at this makes me think that I need to go on a Cale spending spree to fill in the gaps in my collection. And yes, that title is a motherfucker of an attention getter.
