Madame Fly, have you ever listened to any early Public Image Limited, particularly Second Edition aka Metal Box? Bassist Jah Wobble has these incredible bass lines that are very dub-like. And they support John Lydon's unique vocal delivery very well.

Good ear, Bob -- track 2 on Illegal Dub (The Orb's Perpetual Dawn Ultrabass II mix) does in fact feature Jah Wobble on bass. I've got only one PiL album, as I recall, not Metal Box though ... thanks for the tip.
