You just can't be from Texas if you don't have a lotta soul
Comment:
My long-planned Doug Sahm compilation. More than four years after his premature death, Mr. Sahm remains one of rock and roll's most underappreciated mavericks--a "musician's musician", if you will, who won the respect of the most respected figures of his prime (read: Bob Dylan, who is heavily featured on tracks 20, 21 and 22) and combined elements of rock and roll, Tex-Mex, blues, country and jazz into a mixture that he could only call his own. This mix covers his work (and all of his various monikers) through 1976, excepting the Groover's Paradise album that I can't track down to save my life (note: if anyone out there can rectify this situation for me, I'd be eternally grateful). Naturally, songs had to be cut: "The Rains Came", "Tortilla Flats", "And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down", "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again", "I Love the Way You Love (The Way I Love You)", "Dynamite Woman", "The Railpak Dun Gone in the Del Monte", "Oh Lord, Please Let It Rain in Texas", along with his great unfinished covers of "Hey, Good Lookin'" and "Sometimes." Thanks to Jana, btw, for gifting me with a copy of the comp that started all of this. His San Antonio-via-San Francisco music is certainly one of a kind. By the way, the full title of track 6 (which resulted in two misfires when I attempted to submit this mix with it included) is "You Never Get Too Big and You Sure Don't Get Too Heavy, That You Don't Have to Stop and Pay Some Dues Sometime" [sic].Feedback:
yeah, why not, haven't heard all but I like his early stuff, but please avoid everything he did in Sweden in the eighties
A great tribute to a great artist.
Wonderful! I've been planning something like this for a while (and I can't find Groover's either!) but you've done a superb job. Doug has always been one of my favorites. He embodied the entire breadth of Texas music, as you point out, and made it all his own. He's still missed greatly down here.
hope there's a volume 2 - this is so heavy on the SDQ. i'd really like to hear his stuff after that. mendocino - what a great song.
Only know track 1 Rob...but I'm sure the rest of it sounds great!
This is really great! I've been planning to do this mix for 3 years and never got around to it...I do have the Groover's Paradise on vinyl... if you're interested. Sir Doug has been one of my favorites since I was a youngster..I actually got to hang out with him a few times...
Hate to admit it but I don't know any of this but now that you've got me intrigued Rob, I'll have to rectify matters. French Connection via Gobi's.
great composite of an artists work to be remembered for sure. nice mix!
This reminds me that I haven't heard nearly enough of this artist. I've heard about half a dozen tracks and liked them all, so this would be a great place to start. Once again, Rob, well done for highlighting an underappreciated artist.
OH! This is a great, great idea, with an execution that is on par. This man is/was terribly underrated. I'm with Sean inre: a second volume.
Terrific collection. So much great music.
Nice. Like Dom, I'm only familiar with track 1 and for years I thought it was a Ray Charles tune!
Hats off to you sir, this is an impressive summation.
Ditto French, not familiar with the chap but this all looks interesting...
Hmmm...interesting. Good go here brother!
About 3 weeks ago I spent too much money on the Rhino Handmade Dou Sahm 2cd-set. Holy smoke, incredible stuff nearly all over. This looks really nice as well, I'm not so familliar with his 60s recordings but....;)
Amen Brother Rob! You can't go wrong with this catalog, but you seemed to have distilled it down to a single disc perfectly.
