Comment:
Born 1925, Southsea, England. Big Break: The Goons. Morose, difficult and deeply insecure, with questionable parenting techniques and a Mother Fixation to boot (Jewish through & through), Sellers' talent lay in his brilliant mimicry which often turned his movies into one joke-affairs (The Party) but made him extremely watchable and disguised his abilities as an actor.Side 1 (track three) One of Englands best loved singers, comedians and film-stars, George Formby's personna was the amiable dope who got the girl. His schtick involved playing the Ukelele and singing saucy post-card lyrics (Fanlight Fanny, Dare Devil Dick and With My Little Ukulele In My hand). Before Hendrix there was Formby and his Ukulele.
(track five) Ken Dodd is a British Comedian who at one time had a TV programme, which featured The Diddymen (five string puppets: Dicky Mint, Mick The Marmaliser, Wee Hamish, Harry Cott and The Honourable Nigel Ponsoby-Smallpiece), who lived in Diddy Village, Diddyland.
(track six) Peter Wyngarde was a TV Star during the early seventies in the cult show `Jason King' which was more notable for fashion than plot.
(track seven) Scottish born Lonnie Donegan was King Of The Skiffle (Spanish Guitar, Tea-Chest Bass and Washboard) and influenced amongst others The Beatles whose rise sent Donegan (kitchen utensils and alls) to the cabaret circuit.
(track eleven) During the sixties Janice Nicholls was a panelist on TV Show `Thank your Lucky Stars' where she reviewed the current discs on release. Her catch phrase was `I'll give it five' or `O'ILL give it FOIVE' (phonetically spelt in her Black Country Twang). Such was her popularity; she released a novelty song in which she name-checks various artists including Elvis Presley and Shirley Bassey. Like most novelty songs, it does not bear too many repeated listens unless your FOIVE years old or younger or enjoy sticking needles into your eye.
Side 2 (track five) Derek & Clive are of course Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. This particular routine is about the influence of TV, with Cook watching The TV show `Holocaust' and then catching the bus and murdering thousands of Jews. It's not terribly funny and you can audibly hear Dudley (himself Jewish) squirming in his seat and Cook (very, very drunk) doing his best to shock.
(track eight) Joyce Grenfell was a British comedienne actress who appeared in many films during the fifties usually as a sexually repressed Games Mistress with a stiff upper lip.
(track ten) Led by British Eccentric Viv Stanshall and included Neil Innes, the Bonzos, during the late sixties, made a series of Comic pop/rock songs which are part Pythonesque and part Sellers' and, in my opinion, are far superior to Zappa's.
(track eleven) Sellers as an Indian mounting an Indianised version of My Fair Lady.
(track thirteen) Alma Cogan, star during the fifties and sixties, when pop music in Britain was light entertainment and about as sexy as listening to your bed-partner coughing up phlegm. But she recorded an extraordinary version of The Beatles' `Eight Days A Week' which is as good as anything Dusty ever recorded and had she not have died, when she did, might have made an album befitting her vocal talents.
(track fourteen) Blousy Brass was Diana Dors, who was Britain's answer to Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe and was by far the better actress (in Mansfield's case it wasn't hard) though just as tragic. She played hard, married badly and became obese before succumbing to cancer. She can be seen in Adam Ants `Prince Charming' video (yup, she's the big blonde woman with a cleavage to die happy in, waving a wand).

Feedback:
Brilliant actor, brilliant mix.
I've got to echo Sean's sentiments. You keep turning out uniformly brilliant mixes.
unbelievably this is the first mix to feature Ken Dodd, dispite the almighty Hapiness and many a popular croon... mind i guess this figures when you take into account that Matt Munro only comes up twice. I'm sure this is much a giggle down to the drunken offensiveness and it's many uberPop features - Dusty! Beatles! Mancini!
is there anybody else out there who likes Alma Cogan, mainly because of the sound of her name?
yes! yes! yes! the man was a genious. great stuff, dom.
Rare brilliance in the case of Sellars and Dom ... except Dom keeps "slugging 'em out of the park" as we Yanks might say. Where do Dom and Curtis get dey mojo????
Does your mix 'ave a leesaunce?
Some great moments here. Why would you include a track that is as enjoyable as "sticking needles into your eye"?

Huge props for the inclusion of Irivng (even on the range he brings two sets of dishes!). And Ape Call?!? You rock. Damnit, I love this whole mix. I've looked at the track listing four times now and each time a new fave jumps out. This looks incredibly fun and very fitting for Mr Sellers. This makes me want to break out the peter Sellers albums, which i haven't listened to in many years.
And for me this disc is TRIPLEY timely. I've been tracking my Bond soundtracks for a Best of Bond disc, I'm two movies into the Pink Panther box, and I've been listening to lots of Bonzos in anticipation of seeing Neil Innes next week. Again, this is just top drawer. If those bastards didn't just get MotW with their scary (yet somehow still lovable) Kids mix I'd campaign for this one. Great job.

Great selections for one of my favorite actors. His Quilty/Zempf roles in Lolita is my favorite, I think. Sadly, like many great artists, he was a troubled man who was often an a-hole. Boom ditty boom ditty boom ditty boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom!
Oh, this has to be the best of these so far. The liner notes are great and the choices even better - Mancini, Springtime For Hitler...fabulous work!!
Fantastic!
This simply great Dom.
Far beyond "clever".
Sellers deserves this. Truly exemplifies the "art" in AOTM.

Quite brilliant, Dom. I loved Peter Sellers the actor and funny man, and this mix does his talents justice. Brilliant liners note once again.
another classic from ya
Hey Dom - it looks like you've captured him. Absolutely great! A Shot in the Dark certainly was not 67. Maybe 1964, right after the first one
Count me among the many fans-----of the MAN and the MIX! Bittersweet..., Chauncey the Gardener.....
Missed this one too Dom, well I was away from home! Blinding mix, great liner notes, great comedian, complete bastard of a father.
