Ella enjoyed a golden decade-plus on the Verve label, egged on by Verve boss Norm Grantz to put her stamp on the Great American Songbook. And there was plenty more where that came from, some 40 LPs featuring her dulcet tones - not a bummer in the bunch. My jazzbo friends think I'm a moron for preferring her to Billie Holiday, but that's what jazzbo friends are for. So here's a selection each from most of her Verve LPs, almost in chronological order - cuts 3 & 4 on side one should be reversed, and I cheated to get the Mercer track on and all of the magnificent Songbooks represented (don't miss the Gershwin, Arlen and Rodgers & Hart editions).
