For me, the mixtape has always either served as telegram (although the best spoke volumes)or as documentation of time I very easily could have spent twiddling my thumbs but chose rather to twiddle the knobs and press play. In my younger days, I referred to the latter kind as "self-help recording sessions." I'm more self-aware now; I know exactly what I'm doing. How many mixtapes have I made as a diversion, twiddling my thumbs while work awaits? Many chores await me tonight. So, this, it seems, is the appropriate time to be my own DJ. Merely listening to music would be idleness, but engineering this tape last night was productivity...of some sort. A diversionary tactic, I've resorted to such lately. Wednesdays. I'm probably the only person who could make it all the way through this selection, but this is not a telegram. Although if we could arrange it that way, I would be further justified in pushing my take-home work aside.
