Comment:
"We wanted to do something with some oomph, some zest, some humour and some fun."-- Dave Faulkner, in the Sydney Morning Herald, 1997
Here is a mix for a friend who has never experienced the Hoodoo Gurus.
Amazing but true, what follows is the sum total of the band's Australian top 40 chart placings:
My Girl, No. 35 (October 1983)
Bittersweet, No. 16 (June 1985)
Like Wow - Wipeout, No. 15 (October 1985)
What's My Scene, No. 3 (May 1987)
Good Times, No. 36 (August 1987)
Come Anytime, No. 26 (June 1989)
Miss Freelove 69, No. 17 (April 1991)
A Thousand Miles Away, No. 33 (July 1991)
Criminal. All these tunes should have topped the charts.
Feedback:
Great mix. Great band. I was totally hooked the first time I hear "I Was Kamikazee Pilot" and never looked back. And "I Want You Back" is one of the greatest pop songs ever.
I saw them on their first US tour shortly after Stoneage Romeos came out in the states, opening for the Church. I liked the Church but I was jacked to see the Gurus. They did the whole album, were even better than my firends and i expected. We were so wound up after the show we decided to leave before the Church went on and ran into the guitarist in front of the venue. I had him sign the setlist and he asked me why the others hadn't already signed it. When I told him becasue he was the only one standing outside he realized that the other Gurus didn't send us out there to catch him before he went back to the hotel. He was was amazed that a group of people would go see them and leave before the Church went on. He dragged us back into the venue and backstage to meet rest of the guys - they sent a roadie to the crowd to find the bassist watching the show and dragged him back to say hi. We were staying at the same hotel as them and ended up going to their room to buy a t-shirt (they didn't bring enough to sell at merch booths since they assumed that nobody would care). I finally threw out that faded, tissue thin skeletan of a shirt a year or two ago and it killed me. The Gurus were insanely nice and have been an unwavering fave of mine for all of these years.
Did I mention great mix? Sorry, I can ramble when I'm excited. Let's All Turn On!. Dale.

Man, I've got to switch to decaf.
Tres amusante!
great!
Hail the Gurus! They deserve more respect! (I love "Miss Freelove 69")
YEAH!!!!
I've never been a big fan of single artist mixes, but I gotta tell you that I love this one. I have always thought the Hoodoo Gurus were criminally underappreciated. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Great job!
Great mix. Ditto below about this underated & underappreciated band.
What Sean said!!!!!!!!!
Very, very cool. "Mars Needs Guitars" and "Stoneage Romeos" were two pretty major albums for me when I was in high school. Classic group and an awesome mix.
oh now when i see this, I really remember that i miss them a lot
I love these guys too! Out that door is such a masterpiece! Hope all is well.

When I was in elementary school my dad took my twin sister and I to our very first concert: The Bangles with the Hoodoo Gurus opening. It was at an outdoor amplitheater and I remember covering my ears the whole time the HGs played because it was so loud! I still don't think I've ever really heard them and yet they are a part of my childhood... :)
