From the very beginning, Toots & The Maytals were at the forefront of Jamaican music. When they were still simply the Maytals, they cut sharp-shooting ska tunes, like 1964’s “If You Act This Way,” with pioneering producer Byron Lee. Just a year later, they were already slowing that ska groove down to a simmer and roaming into rocksteady territory with “Love Is a Special Feeling.” And decades later, the ska circle remained unbroken when Maytals disciples the Specials and ska originators the Skatalites joined Toots on an update of the Maytals’ jumping ’63 single “Never Grow Old.”
