Comment:
Part 2 of 2. Opening with the familiar cover of the Pink Floyd classic, and into (possibly) the most melancholy song the band ever wrote, "Future Boy." This song defines the tone of Adam and Eve, my favorite CW album. (Chrome is a close second, with Like Cats and Dogs not far behind.) "Hole" is my favorite track off Happy Days (the song is about Kurt Cobain's suicide); "Dead Girlfriend" is dark, twisted, and sadistic -- it's one of my favorite non-albums tracks; "Descending Babe" is THE favorite song never to make it to an album -- like "Lucifer", it is a demo from the A&E sessions, and is simply one of the most gorgeous and wrenching songs you will ever hear; and of course there's "Kill Rhythm" (here it is, Dale! and did I accidentally delete your post?), the blistering opener of Chrome and mix namesake; "Capacity to Change" is the Holy Grail of CW songs, released as the accompanying track on a "Judy Staring at the Sun" promo single -- it is near-impossible to track down, and I once saw it go for over $300.00 on eBay, but holyfuck, this song is so worth it -- it will blister your ass!; "Pleasure" is a dirty little rock number, followed by the majestic, shimmering "Black Metallic"...arguably the best love song written to a car you have ever heard, and an epic known to exceed 15-20 minutes at live shows (the WHFS acoustic version is perfection!); then there's the triple-H-bomb of "Half Life" (IMO, the single most underrated CW song ever), "Harder Than I Am" (another of my Top Five contenders), and the absolutely monstrous "Here Comes the Fat Controller", which has been known to have me singing at the top of my lungs without inhibition -- "you know, you know you're alive" -- SWOON. I included the XFM version of another favorite from Chrome, "Broken Head", because it fucking rips, and I ended the whole shebang with that same album's unexpected pop number, "Show Me Mary." I may do a "rarities" collection next, but this alone exhausted me. While I am notoriously anal about keeping a minimum of two copies of each record by this band (a copy in case I have to force it onto someone, you know?), I unfortunately cannot afford to buy the entire catalog for the uninitiated every single time the band comes up -- alas! If I could, I would -- in a heartbeat. I love this band. Hopefully, this will help a few other people fall in love, too.Feedback:
Killer stuff from a great band. And I can vouch for the epic length and power of Black Metallic live - I've seen it several time and it never failed to bowl me over. My comments on the first mix got deleted - I'm assuming that happened when you added the artwork (or I inadvertantly offended you!?!?).
Ah, you know what? I double-posted, and deleted the one that didn't have artwork. Dammit! Sorry about that.
Even though I'm don't know all of Catherine Wheel's stuff, it's exactly this sort of mix that makes me want to become more familiarised with them - it's wonderful to read people's thoughts on a band when they have a real passion for them, and your enthusiasm is really infectious! So if you're ever up for another trade, it would be great to experience a best-of from someone who really cares about the band. Nice cover art too, as always!
excellent!
mmmMmmm...Catherine Wheel!!; though I only have 2 albums; Happy Days & Chrome...the latter is
on my Top 10 favorite albums list, especially the slow & psychotic Fripp ("There's a shark shaped fin in the waters of my dreams...").
Nice Job (both discs).
Great compilation from a criminally underrated band. The recipient of this is lucky to have their introduction to Catherine Wheel be constructed with such care. Love the cover art too.
