Comment:
Getting back into the mix groove, so I thought I'd try my hand at the old Frankenstein mix thing. Here are the categories and some explanations: 1)A song from the last record you bought. Finally got around to picking up this Giant Sand lp. Great stuff. 2) A blues: not necessarily a blues record but something labelled a blues. 3) A song that gets you going in the morning. I've always loved this song about getting away from an annoying person. It's so upbeat. And I was so happy when, on a trip to Scotland, my discovery of the Isle of Skye suddenly made a line in this song clear. 4) A romantic song. 5) One of the earliest records you can remember. This is the first record I every owned. I cut it out from the back of a cereal box (Frosted Flakes I think)! 6) A song you discovered from a film. In this case it was "Sexy Beast" (a film that also features an incredible use of a Stranglers song ). 7) A song from your favorite band. A tough category; does anyone over the age of 16 really have a favorite band? I toyed with throwing a Fall track in here but ultimately went with the Fab Four. An obvious choice perhaps, but, hey, I do love 'em. 8) Song from an artist you don't otherwise like. I kind of cheated here. There are a couple of PJ tunes I don't mind (though I find their general catalogue to be a little too earnest for my taste). This is one that I just plain like. 9) A lullaby. 10) A song that makes you laugh. 11) A really good cover version. 12) A song that reminds you of school days. This was a big radio hit in my early adolescence. I still love it. 13) A song from an artist you are embarrassed to admit you like. I might be cheating with this category too. I don't like Fleetwood Mac at all; in fact, I hate 'em. And I especially can't stand Stevie Nicks' whole California gypsy queen persona. So I'm doubly embarrassed to admit that I like this song. Sold on it by Red Kross's great version. 14) Something funky. 15) A song for quiet, rainy days. This is off the "Early Recordings" lp, all of which is great for a rainy day. 16) A song that always makes you feel good. 17) A song with the word "look" in the title. 18) From a member of the Dead Rocker's Society. I was originally going to use a Bon Scott-era AC/DC tune but then heard this song on the radio and changed my mind. 19) Favorite Elvis song. I can't say I have a definitive favorite but I like this one pretty well. 20) Wild Card: any song you like. Seemed like a good way to bookend the whole thing.
Feedback:
Looks good Lancelot! i'm a sucker for CHER!
Great mix, like the comments too.
Excellent almost all the way. ("Sugar Sugar" makes me cringe every time I hear it!) Great categories and some great tunes. Love the Elvis, and glad you finally got around to buying the Giant Sand.
Awesome! Unbelievably, I'm bringing life back to Frankenstein at the moment and my track (5) was also this Archie's track. AND, Half Man Half Biscuit (The Trumpton Riots) was going to be my track to remind me of school. Anyway, enough of the stoned ramblings of an idiot, great mix.
thurston moore trumphs madonna.
