Comment:

side a

adolf wolfi - ebony towers in the orient - w÷lfi (1864-1930) was a criminally insane swiss man who spent over 35 years of his life in the waldau mental asylum where he was allowed to write, draw and compose. this piece is performed by graeme revell.

anton lavey - prologue to the satanic mass - don't laugh. it fits.

diamanda galas - this is the law of the plague (excerpt) - galas, who played with ornette coleman in the 70s, is best known for her three part 'plague mass,' which was performed at a catholic cathedral in new york city in 1991 - where she had been ejected several months earlier for participating in a die-in during mass. her brother died of aids several years before and much of her artistic and personal projects have focused on the disgusting treatment of those affected with/by the disease. in particular, the catholic church has been less than thrilled with her accusations; she's been called a "blasphemer" and was actually banned from performing in italy at one point. this particular track is mostly lines from the old testament.

rev. fred phelps - god hates america (excerpt) - phelps is the the most outrageous homophobe i can think of, running the godhatesfags.com website and picketing funerals of queers.

bob ostertag & kronos quartet - all the rage (excerpt) - ostertag came up with the idea for this track after the riots that happened when california governor pete wilson (who just died a couple of days ago) vetoed an anti-discrimination bill for queer people in 1991.

dedication orchestra - traumatic experience (excerpt) - this group was formed in memory of a free jazz group called the blue notes, a band from the 1960s that was essentially exiled from south africa during apartheid.

paul robeson - anthem of the u.s.s.r. - this is the original version (well, in english) which was changed in 1977 to remove the referece to joseph stalin. at the time of his death over 20 million soviets had been killed under his direction, and 14 million were imprisoned in gulags. a worse butcher than hitler.

artist unknown - palestine will be free - israel's occupation of palestine is illegal under international law and yet palestinians are considered the "terrorists."

diamanda galas - iron lady - this song was originally written by phil ochs but galas' motivation for performing it makes it so much more powerful. on her 'malediction and prayer' release, she dedicates the track to aileen wuornos, who was executed in 2002. from her website: "the existence of this woman, whose life remained undefended since the day of her birth to the day of her death-- as a street prostitute, a middle-aged woman, a lesbian, and a child raped continuously by her father, was comprised of the four strikes that finally put her into critical mass. at the time of the murders wuornos confessed to-- under the coercion of incompetent legal defense-- there were ongoing investigations of the independent serial murders of many street prostitutes in florida. in 2002, after living on death row for ten years, wuornos finally become worn down and asked to die by lethal injection." galas has also spoken in several interviews about her own history as sex worker and experiences with what she calls the "wild cards," making the track even more personal.

bob flanagan - fuck sonnet - bob "supermasochist" flanagan (1952-1996) had cystic fibrosis and, like most people with cf, was not expected to live past childhood. in order to "fight pain with pain" he began to incorporate s/m into his public and private lives, engaging in some pretty intense performance art.

westboro baptist church - america the burning - this is fred phelps' choir.

side b

krzysztof penderecki - threnody for the victims of hiroshima for 52 stringed instruments - this piece was written in 1960. in 1964, penderecki wrote "let the threnody express my firm belief that the sacrifice of hiroshima will never be forgotten and lost."

mark bain - one hour as the sound hits the ground (excerpt) - after the attacks on the twin towers on september 11, 2001, bain took the resulting seismological data and turned it into a vibrational soundtrack. this track is part of what the inside of the earth sounded like when the first tower was hit and began to collapse.

arkitekchur - symbol/language>discourse - the disc that this track is from is essentially joseph lisciandro's response to the post-9/11 world. all of the samples are from television news repots; the person who says "your children are not safe" is the police sergeant of washington d.c. reading from sniper john allen muhammad's letter.

lisa germano - ...a psychopath - germano was stalked by a "fan" through the late 80s and early 90s. the background 911 call is real. the police didn't get there in time and the woman was raped.

diamanda galas - orders from the dead - galas' most recent release, 'defixiones: will and testament,' has been dedicated to the "forgotten and erased" of the armenian, assyrian, and greek genocides 1914-1923.

This is very, very heavy, and yet very necessary. The "Reverend" Phelps is headquartered not too far from here and regularly shows up in KC to spread his message of hate. I applaud the work on this, but, frankly, I can't say that I would think it a pleasureable listen. This is a mighty impressive piece of work here.

You should be proud to have the only Bob Flanagan track on the entire website. Nice work.

p.s. Fuck Fred Phelps.
