Comment:

I made this mix about 4-5 years ago. It was sort of a collective work of all the music I had discovered that year, and at the time I really did think all of it was emo. So before any of you all shoot me, remember that i was 17 when i made this - and i'm now 21.

I should resume my endless struggle to get "emo" listed as an official category so that it can stop being mislabelled as "indie rock." How long can JKJ ignore me on this?!

that's just the point, a lot of these artists aren't emo. hence the name of the cd was wrong, and why i labeled the cd under indie rock. because that's what it IS.

almost half of that is "emo"...i use the quotation marks only because there's actual good emotional music out there that isn't affiliated with vagrant/drive thru...there's really only three indie bands on here..getting into semantics..blah blah blah

no if you want to break it down we can. a few of the bands are pop emo (weezer, midtown, nfg), a hardish core band (i have no idea what to classify thursday as anymore), blonde redhead, afi, buck 65, the stryder, the faint, greenday, juliana theory, jimmy eat world definately not emo.

also, bright eyes is not emo, that's a misnomer given to them/him by seventeen magazine...if anyone wanted to discuss this, we can do it in aim?

c'mon now, juliana theory are emo poster boys, jimmy eat world's a bit emo too, the others you said, obviously aren't..no one here's calling green day emo (though the faint started out as a shitty emo band)

but obviously that song by the faint is not emo. and jimmy eat world, emo? never, perhaps the album clarity could be considered that, but bleed american is at most pop rock/alt. juliana theory i suppose could be considered emo, but it would depend on which album you're talking about. emotion is dead - is more rock than anything as is music from another room. love and understand this is a dream i'll give those to you as emo.
but seeing as how i didnt chose a lot of songs by those artists from their "emo" albums, means that this mix was mistitled by me.

As tired as I am by this debate, I feel I need to throw my two cents in. JEW is the closest thing to an "emo" band on this list. While nothing off Bleed American can even be considered "emo" their earlier stuff certainly had "emo" influences. Go listen to Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Christie Front Drive, Braid, and early Jawbreaker for a more accurate idea of what "emo" actually is.

you guys are all funny. 17.. 21.. 24.. 13.. 15.. children! :) I pissed off some guy on some other board by refering to AFI as "emo" .. but that's what they sounded like to me.. I heard their new songs on the radio and I thought..wow, what emo band is this? labels are stupid anyway. this looks like a fun mix that I would enjoy listening to.. I'd probably skip the over-played Green Day song.. Man, I thought JEW were the poster boys of Emo. I guess I don't know jack.. hehehe! have a day.

I guess there is the one problem that so many people who listen to emo want to nit-pick what is and isn't emo, so even if JKJ creates an emo category, a number of emo mixes would still get mislabeled. Yes, a lot of these bands are only half-emo, but are still the bands that emo kids always like, therefore this mix is emo ALL the way. Blonde Redhead is the only band that feels a little bit out of place on an emo mix.

and actually the completely accurate title of that green day song is "good riddance (time of your life)"

I was obsessed with them in 8th grade, I get picky.

well, all i can say mephiskapheles and cross bone style is if you had read the previous posts you yould have no reason to question why afi is on this mix. Also, bright Eyes is not EMO. It's indie rock. It was indie rock when he put out fevers and mirrors, it was indie rock when he put out the story in the soil, and he's indie rock even with the new bright eyes/neva dinova split ep.

I would say that most of that is emo/screamo, except The Faint. They are definitely Indie Rock. Weezer is not emo either, they are Geek Rock. The others have various other categories they could fit into, but they are still emo. Green Day is Punk Emo. Bright Eyes is Indie Emo. Thursday is Screamo. A New Found Glory is Punk Emo. AFI is Punk Rock Emo.

Dashboard, Get Up Kids, Juliana Theory... All definitely emo. I would consider Jimmy Eat World emo as well.

Alkaline Trio, however, I do not know how to categorize. I would not consider them "emo" in emo's usual sense.
