Comment:
So here's the deal... My friend Mike decided to treat himself to a guitar. Now, Mike is in his 40s and has never really played an instrument before, but he knows a ton about pop music and he figured that it was time to make some rock. Besides, how hard can it be? This is a primer for him, or for anyone who ever wanted to raise the goblet of rock. As some of you may know, I'm a professional yapper - that is, I'm a teacher (physics and astronomy). I've tried my hand at giving guitar lessons, too - sadly, I've found it really hard to teach guitar. Maybe it's because I taught myself guitar, with all the bad musical habits that entails. Also, when I was starting out, the only guitar players I really knew about were prog guys like Steve Hackett and Steve Howe. Clearly, a novice can't learn much from listening to those goofballs. Now, Johnny Ramone on the other hand..... Anyway, disc is arranged for maximum rockability - Songs are arranged by key: 1-6 (A), 7-11 (E), 12-15 (D), 16-21 (G), and that brings us back to (A) for closure. Got it? Now get to rockin! (And remember me on the liner notes of your first record.... and don't forget to thank me at the Grammies .... and try to hold off on smashing your guitar for a few months ... and....).
Feedback:
Sean, my man! What an excellent mix, and great background information, too. (BTW: "Arranged For Maximum Rockability" would make a great name for a mix....) I was going to point out the stretch of tunes that really impressed me, but that would pretty much be the entire mix. Quite impressive all the way around.
Yeah, after trying (unsuccessfully) to emulate the likes of Page & Howe, Johnny dumbed down the six strings for me too. Interesting thing about your friend picking up an ax, I was getting the post-40 urge to do the same. A more likely scenario for me than throwing a perfect game.
Sean, when they start confusing me with Link Wray I am going to thank you publicly!
Haha. This is awesome and a fascinating idea. Good show.
What a fantastic, fantastic (and yet again fantastic) idea. I've contemplated making a mix of stuff that's very easy to play, but haven't ever had the drive to do it. Love seeing "Roadrunner". It's like "Whole Wide World" with that whole "two chords and the truth". Yeah, they said three, but it looks like we can boil it down even more.
And lo-fi, if that half-man, half-ostrich can throw a perfect game, I'm sure you can too. You can still hit 98 right?

Wow, it's a bit eerie how we both posted mixes with "No Sex" on it - within like 2 minutes of each other. (Very cool mix, BTW, but then the Lalley mixes are always high quality, you know.)
Fantastic.
Hey, wait a minute... some of these songs have more than three chords!
Great. Fun.
Great fun!
Great fun!
Thanks, kids! Saaf IS right - some of these tunes do have more than 3 chords. Some actually have 4! OK, maybe a few have 5 ... or (gasp!) 6?!?!?!?
Move over Mel Bay! Sean Lally is God!
That's it! I'm gettin' a guitar!
Good stuff. Keep us updated on Mike's progress.
My 9 year old is plucking away on an old electric I've had lying around - he wanted me to show him how to do "Iron Man" & "Smoke on the Water" - I think this set should be included as part of his lessons...great, great job...
(Oh Boy, The Kids are Alright, Peace, etc. & Stop Your Sobbin' are songs I bash out on my old acoustic to lull the boys to sleep at night!)

Yep, all good. And the cover is fun too!
Looks like three chords (or possibly four, maybe five) chords and the truth, though I think it would take me more than 7 days to play any of these songs. Love the music and the foxy axe-toting babe on the cover. You the man.
you can count me in on this course too
What a Great Idea! I thought I had seen all the possible permutations: tracks organised by date, alphabetically, etc etc.. but organising a Mix by key ... If I was wearing a hat I would take it off to you!
Very good! My flatmate could use this mix. He's teaching himself.
superb stuff, as ever, Sean. Great pic, great story, and most importantly, great songs! I wish I was mix of the week editor once more so I could give this top prize! While I'm here, do you think you could explain the theory of relativity in ten words? It always escaped me.
Outstanding. This looks like great fun.
Very nice. I tried to play guitar a few years ago... I learned a half-assed version of "Paradise City" by Guns & Roses and then gave up. Anyway, nifty mix.
Excellent primer & a great idea, Sean. The less people that play 'House of the Rising Sun' & 'Stairway to Heaven' (introduction only) when they start guitar, the better. First thing I learned to play was The Jam's English Rose. Great mix!
Great idea. I've taught people to play guitar using almost all of these songs ("Oh! Boy" is the first one I teach someone).
Outstanding mix!! This is a primer for the great "riffs" of all time...
Air guitar at the ready - what a cool mix.
Cool mix. I learned my raw, primal guitar technique via the Johnnys (Ramone and Thunders). The dude in The Seeds taught me all I know about keyboard playing too.
I go one mississippi, two mississippi, three mississippi, four mississippi
lets rock

cool idea, sean. i've always wnted to learn to play guitar. maybe i need a copy (and then more than the air guitar)so i can get started!
Well, maybe I can't learn to play the guitar, but I bet I could learn to listen to this mix.
I do believe in starting simple - (& ending up simple, too, if possible). Too simple-minded? If so, then this is the mix for me!

What an amazing idea for a mix! Great tracks, great idea--well done Professor Lally!
