Comment:
"Rarely has a singer had as full and unique a talent as Rod Stewart; rarely has anyone betrayed his talent so completely." -- Greil Marcus, 1980.Feedback:
Great picks and I agree completely with that Greil Marcus quote.
And I agree with Mo Twang!
I've always loved that Marcus quote, and thought the Faces had a chance to be as good as the Stones with a better singer. Didn't quite work out that way, though.
Nice mix and ditto on the quote!
I think you found all his best songs. And put me in the Greil camp as well.
Nice mix. Good to see a review of Stewart's career peak.
Ha! We were just talking about him yesterday. As pop tunes go, his later 70s ones aren't so bad either. Not to sound like a snob but, I'd throw some Faces on here, too, losing some other tracks.
Amen to Greil. And I agree with Sean -- where are the Faces cuts?
I didn't include cuts by the Faces because the majority of my favorite Faces tunes are written/sung by Ronnie Lane and my favorite, "Ooh La La", is sung by Ron Wood. Therefore, they may be subject to their own mix someday. I do agree with Sean, though, that some of his late 70's hits are guilty pleasures... I just don't have access to any of them on CD (I borrowed all of this Mercury-era stuff from my friend Ed last night).
Greil's right, and this is pretty good proof of that.
A good Grei Marcus quote. All the Mercury albums from 69 to 72 were great classics. Stewart was also amazing on the early Jeff Beck Group albums. Even Atlantic Crossing and A Night On The Town from 75 & 76 were pretty darn good. It was all down hill from there and still tumbling.
Oft overlooked... he is still a talent to be reckoned with. I really like his cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" as well. Excellent picks.
Interestingly, I recently revisited Rod Stewart. Like my comprades, I agree with Greil. This looks pretty darn good.
No need for guilt about this pleasure (well...provided you stop in the mid-70's). If only Greil knew what was to come post-1980! Nice.
I have to admit that I usually found one or two gems even on his later albums (Downtown Train comes to mind as does Trouble) - but even those tracks paled terribly in comparison with this material. You have to be pretty great to fall so far - and I have to agree that I can't think of anyone who fell much further (Elvis, perhaps?)...
When Rod was good he was very good...but as soon as he crossed over to The U.S. his music was utter crap. Every Picture Tells A Story is Rod's finest moment outside of The Faces!
every picture tells a story is definitely a classic summer album-
great mix, Rob. Can't fault the song selection. He was a great til about 1976, with the (very) occasional good track thereafter.
Am I the only one here who thinks Rod Stewart was utter crap until he recorded the timeless classic "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"!? Guess so ;) Top-notch mix BTW.
I think its probably very "hip" to dismiss all of Rod's recent work, but to me, one of his beautiful love ballads is worth a million "greasy guitar workouts" with ron woods.
