Comment:

A very short, incomplete retrospective of Ray Charles, who we lost earlier today. And this is a true loss - Brother Ray brought the church to the pop charts and soul to the country. This mix focuses on his earlier material (with the exception of "America the Beautiful" - no better version will ever be done) - to which I was introduced at a very early age - my dad is a very big Ray Charles fan. I believe this disc needs to go to dad. Elvis may have been King, but only Ray Charles was "The Genius."

While the country mourns the death of Ronnie Ray-Gun, this is the loss that has truly touched my heart. Ray Charles was the one artist that everybody in my household agreed on -- my father who was a C&W fan, my mother who dug the pop standards, my older brothers and sisters who liked blues, jazz, folk, and rock & roll. Everybody loved Ray Charles. This is a wonderful tribute. Love his early stuff, particularly "What'd I Say," "Mess Around," and the imcomparable "Lonely Avenue." Very, very good. So long, Brother Ray!

Here is the man who should be lying in state in the US Capitol. Contrast the joy Brother Ray brought to millions with the politics of arrogance, greed and death that is Ronald Reagan's legacy. RIP Ray.

Exactly what the esteemed mixer from Texas just wrote! Real cause for national mourning, a treasure is gone.

Great tribute. I was wishing that I had enough of his work to compile one of these, but I don't.

I feel very lucky now to have been able to see Ray a few years back. Has there ever been anyone who could mix so many different genres? Who had a greater command of the American musical canon? Those of you who know and understand, tell those who don't! We won't get another Ray Charles.

Yes to Brother Ray. One can't say enough about all he brought to the music world. He will be missed, unlike others who will remain nameless!!! Saw him at a club at Lake Tahoe with my parents with Billy Preston playing with him. Yikes, and the back-up singers. Mmmm, had my little teenage heart a pumping. Like most fantastic artists, even their not so famous tunes are actually quite nice!

A soulful mix for a soulful man. We have lost a legend this week, and this is a very fitting tribute. Some additions that would go nicely include "Unchain My Heart", "One Minute Jullip" and "Hit The Road Jack". Goodnight Ray, and Cheers. -Famous.

I love this! My dad was also a Ray fan, although I didn't discover this until after my dad passed away and I went through a big Ray phase. My mom pointed out to me that he'd loved Ray back when they were dating (sure enough I found some fantastic LPs in his collection, all pretty much mint!). I've had a soft spot in my heart for this guy ever since. Fantastic tribute and wonderful mix.
