Comment:

This mix was started as a for-the-hell-of-it, multi-volume project which will attempt to explain why I think the 60s will never be matched as a musical decade. Although I meant for this mix to be all-encompassing, it wound up being entirely made up of rock/pop/folk stuff. Future volumes will either include jazz, r 'n' b/soul, and country or will be specifically set aside for those genres. Title of the series from the Skip Spence tune.

This is cool stuff and I can't wait for the rest. As a "child" of the 60's this music influences to this day what I look for and like in music.

To quote Frank Zappa: Wowie zowie! I don't know where to begin. Love the fact you picked the lesser-known gems by these folks, and there are just too many great moments to mention them all -- so I'll just pick one: Zombies to the Fugs is choice.

Quite nice all around. Wonder if it's something about the warm weather that makes one think of the 60's. I've been on a late '60's kick myself lately (got a hippiemix on the way shortly). I'll note, at risk of forfeiting my rock elitist membership, that the Skip Spence Oar album is one of those "lost classics" that I have never been able to enjoy. A couple tracks at best, but when I see his name listed alongside other acid casualties like Barrett and Erickson, I just have to shrug.

Like James, I appreciate the lesser-known picks, and like Bear, I'm looking forward to the soul/R&B disc (and the country one too!). And I also agree with hemizen's sentiment. And this sort of raises the question of what qualifies as 60s music. I've always thought of the 60s -- musically, politically, and spiritually -- as encompassing teh Vietnam years. Basically the LBJ and Nixon administrations (11/63-8/74), rather than 1960 - 1969. After Nixon resigned and the US pulled out of Vietnam, the music (with many notable exceptions, of course) just seemed to lose much of its vitality and freshness. Great job here Rob. Looking forward to the others.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm sorry to hear about Marc's relative aversion to Skip Spence, as Oar is honestly one of my twenty or so favorite records ever; based upon that one album, I prefer him to both Syd and Roky (who are favorites of mine, as well). As far as what years I'm using to frame the 60s, I'm going with 1960-69, I think, although I see Mr. Onn's point and agree from a pop-culture point of view.

Fantastic all over Rob, as usual! Always nice to see Gainsbourg, Stooges & Incredible string band on the same mix! What a lovely Kinks choice!

I agree. The 60s rocked! I sometimes wonder if that era of music will still be appreciated 100 years from now. I can hardly imagine what people will be listening to in 2104. Will there be any undiscovered melodies left? Will there even be melodies? Anyway, I digress. Wonderful mix. Looking forward to the others.

great looking mix and like everyone else, I firmly believe that period was so creative due to the circumstances of the world. radio was freer so you heard more. for the most part today, I rely on friends and this site to give me pointers on newer material to check out. I know you'll have some Brother Ray in a follow-up. I saw him at a club with my parents in the 60s when Billy Preston played with him. Wow is what I thought. Buffy Sainte Marie opened for him and she too is a sometimes overlooked artist from the 60s. anticipate the others in the series!

I like to think that the music of my own period of enlightenment was the best ever, but man, you make a great case for the 60's. Count me in for all future volumes.

I can't add to what you have said, Rob. Or how the guys have summed up the sixties. A look at 90% of my mixes tells you how influencial and enjoyable the music of the sixties was/is to me. I don't think I'll ever stop loving the music of that decade. This is a really great mix. I love every track.

Nice - I can only look at the 60s through 80s/90s filters, and so, like lo-fi, have my own "period of enlightenment", but this is exactly the sort of thing that showcases the creativity of the decade. Like the Zombies, VU and Kinks especially.

Yes, the 60's are right up there with the 20's as a mind-expanding decade, & can't never be encompassed, no way no how, but this set to my taste is an excellent sampler & avoids the tempting pitfall of obviousness . . .

Really nice start here. Lots of staples mixed with the deeper cuts and artists. Every time I've ever started a mix like this I've ended up pitching it because I keep chaning gears and losing focus. Keep up the good mix.
