Comment:
Full title of the Sir Douglas song: "You Never Get Too Big and You Sure Don't Get Too Heavy, That You Don't Have to Stop and Pay Some Dues Sometime" [sic]. So this volume is a bit more heavy on obvious picks, mostly because I don't have a deep catalog for a lot of these people but like the songs here a whole lot. And shoot me, but "Both Sides Now" is my favorite 60s Joni song, "Elenore" has always been my favorite Turtles song and "Nature's Way" has always been my favorite Spirit song. Title from the Silver Apples track. [Note: Despite all of the fantastic comments (for which I am grateful) praising the inclusion of Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" and Frank Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight", I thought that the mix would work better without them due to their 50s feel. Also, I realized that Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Gene Clark and Led Zeppelin were not represented on the original mix; this bothered me. As a result, I cut Janis Joplin's "Summertime" (which didn't quite work on the mix), and pulled "The Little Black Egg", "Abba" and "(If You Think You're) Groovy" for inclusion on a potential Nuggets-style/one-hit-wonders type of 60s mix to be completed sometime soon. This mix was formally revised on 12/27/04.]Feedback:
Wow. You bring together Chuck Berry, the Silver Apples, and Frank Sinatra - and it all makes perfect sense.
another classic mix
I can't get enough of Paragons "Abba"....Nice mix Rob!
This series is as eclectic as the decade it represents... ...very nice job.
Also great.
Excellent. I love the variety of artists here.
Excellent work, and Sinatra nestling there in the midst of it all. This may well be my favourite of the four.
one of the best in the series! esp love neil diamond, chuck berry, nightcrawlers, the grape, the merry go round, the turtles, the honeycombs and p.p. arnold
This looks fabulous, I've never seen a better 60's collection. Nature's way is also my favorite Spirit song, and Solitary Man by Neil Diamond is one of his best too I think. All of the songs on here are great.
Another great mix. Love the Spirit, Joni, Honeycombs, Troggs, Grape, etc, etc.
Here you again, Rob, with yet another mix that relies on the tired, cliched triumvirate of King Crimson, Frank Sinatra, and the Mothers of Invention.
Grrrrreatttt tracks! (Marc is funny.)
This looks really awesome, Rob. My favorite of this series, by far.
Yup, this is all great, I think it's my favorite so far too!
Your whole series is great stuff. I love the variety. But you're missing the surf genre, a really powerful and creative musical force in the early 60s, overwhelmed by the British invasion.
Ditto...All Good!
Rob, I'm digging your 60's series, but I've been doing some historical research & it shows that Frank Sinatra did not exist in the 60's, even if some of his recordings were issued in that decade. By sheer willpower, he stayed in the 50's for another forty years. And did you ever hear him on the subject of rock & roll?
Thanks, all. Although this is far and away my lest favorite of the four, I appreciate your comments. Bob: I know there isn't any surf music here, but, well, these are pretty much supposed to be collections of 60s moments that I love, not encyclopedia entries. These are also pulled entirely from my own record collection and not from downloading. As a result, since I'm not a big fan of the surf genre (it's okay and all, but I like all of this stuff better), there's none here. Joey: That's hilarious and the same could be said for Chuck Berry. Because of that, I almost passed on including both of them in the series, but just couldn't do it because I love those songs so much. Thanks
ditto everyone. fucking fantastic. vol3 looks great also (missed that)
nice. i was thinking of Faheys "yellow princess" the other day as i've not heard it in so long. went to see him at the great american music hall in SF in the 70s, but he called from N of San Fran. he was so F*&$#*@ up he never made it so the opening act played a few sets. not bad, 'cause it was Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. they were great....
Again with "great mix" stuff. You need to make a lame mix sometime so you can see that I don't ALWAYS say nice things. My fave Mothers song and a mother of a Turtles pick.
Flat-out hopping here...grape, apples and an assortment of other fruits! Also, rounders...
4 superb mixes Rob.
I might try a 70's one when I have time.
