I'm going to see Sonic Youth and Le Tigre next month. The friend I'm going with is going for Le Tigre, I'm going for SY, whom she's very unfamiliar with. So I decided to throw together two 60 min. tapes that represent some highlights from their career. I obviously favor their SST period, which I still find to be their best (esp. "EVOL"). Maybe because that's when I first became exposed to 'em. I know lots of folks love "Daydream Nation" but for me that's when the band starts getting a little formulaic and less interesting. My interest in each release diminished through the 90s, and the second volume of this series ends in 1998, as I don't have the last three albums. I'll certainly have to catch up though (and I hear that the last two are particulary good). Not meant as a definitive "best of," just some of my fave SY songs. Plenty of good stuff has been left off but hopefully this works as an introduction. And I swiped some Savage Pencil graphics off the internet for these since I strongly associate his work with this band.
