Comment:
Fairly obvious, basic, and chronological; still, as X (for all their merits) is another one of those bands whose albums I rarely dust off and listen to cover to cover, this was much needed. Rob Conroy pretty much nailed 'em a few years back, though this extends beyond the first 4 classic albums and picks a few highlights from their weaker (but still intermittently decent) later works. A few observations: 1) Under The Big Black Sun remains my favorite X album, by a very wide margin; 2) Ain't Love Grand is by far my least favorite, in no small part due to the cheesy new wave production values (and "Burning House Of Love" gets included here solely for nostalgic purposes); 3) post Billy Zoom release See How We Are is underrated; and 4) they did a bang-up job with the reissues a year or so back -- listening to those (I have most but not all) alongside the original cd releases is pretty revelatory. Late-Breaking News: 2 minutes after posting this, I read that X has a 2-cd "greatest hits" package due out in late July 2004, rendering this pretty much obsolete. If you don't have the reissues yet, I can't imagine passing it up.
Feedback:
Thanks for the props in your comments. I love this band with great passion--at least the Billy years, anyway--but my favorite records are Wild Gift and Los Angeles. Nice mix.
One of my favorite bands. I recently replaced all my vinyl with their reissue CDs. Hard to pick a favorite album but probably More Fun in the New World that had two of my favorite songs not on your mix... Poor Girl and Devil Doll.
But, the rush of hearing Los Angeles for the first time was awesome and their live performances were incredible.

all great. i like the first two lp's still, but i'm with you on "big black sun" -- it's like they finally delivered it all with that record. great hooks, great playing, passion - everything that was x. the first two are good, but 'sun' is just perfect. most importantly, this band (well, billy zoom) is THE reason I bought a Gretsch silver jet many years back.
Great tra(X)!
X marks the spot. Fantastic collection, even if you snubbed one of my favorites -- I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts.
This kicks serious ass, minus the exclusion of "the Hungry Wolf." But still all in all awesome.
X marks the spot and you hit it with this mix!
Though I can't claim to have a comprehensive knowledge of X, this looks really, really good!
