Every now and then, we come across memories of events and places that weren't particularly remarkable, and yet we can recall minute and absurd details. I had such a memory the other day. A few years ago, I was sitting in the anteroom of a youth hostel in Sligo, Ireland. Also seated rather permanently were these drowsy-looking French people who chain smoked and read while Serge Gainsbourg or somebody played on a boom box. The strange part is that I remember--possibly as a result of excessive Guinness and blood pudding--having very bad gas.

It's sort of a snapshot, I guess.
